It finally happened...the old beaching rudder broke completely off during a less than smooth jibe. The rudder had been modified by the previous owner to fit the Edson Wheel system. He cut more than half through to accommodate the bolts, and I knew it was just a mater of time before it failed. I was hoping that there would be some sort of tell tale sign that the rudder needed to be be replaced. Guess that was my sign.
Ida does not seem to offer a beaching system for the Edson. I am not opposed to removing the wheel since it is difficult to use and less responsive than I would like(I don't have Arlyn's mod), however, I think the bride prefers the wheel to a tiller. Any suggestions?
I'd suggest Catalina. You can call the parts department. The main phone # is 818-884-7700 or contact them via their web site here.
Then I'd install Arlyn's mod. You'll be amazed at the improvement.
I second the catalina call. I'd add a call to Idasailor and ask to talk to the guy in the back... can't remember his name. He offered to make me a slightly longer and slightly more balanced rudder and a wheel steering arm bracket that I would mount after installing the rudder to be sure it would line up for hardly any more money. (Maybe $75) They just needed the dimensions of the arm. He was not inclined to pre drill or mount the bracket as It could be off a bit in height or angle from my arm. It looks as if it would also likely require shortening the arm to make room for the gas strut.
I ended up finding out reading this forum that I had a second generation beaching and reworked it. I'm quite happy with it now. I would like that gas strut hold-down system the Ida rudder comes with. Not worth $1000, though, since that is all I'm missing.
Since you got nothing. (sounds like your rudder head got screwed up by the P.O.) you'll probably need the rudder head and the rudder from catalina and you might be in the same price range as the ida with the gas strut (and the warranted blade should you ever break it again.)
I called Catalina. They do not offer a beaching rudder. So it looks like the solution is with Ida. They will mount a bracket that fits The Edson wheel. not having an engineering background, what sort of issues will i be looking at if they mount a bracket and i then change to Arlyn's system?
I don't think that should impact Arlyn's system since it is designed to attach to a bracket that works with the Edson system. You can e-mail Arlyn to make certain.
I got the rudder 2nd generation blade last year and just replaced my rudder head two weeks ago (the lower pin tail connection sheered on a beam reach) The parts department can be a little flaky. The rudder blade was about $250 and the head was $377. Edson can provide you with the bracket for $88 if you need it. It's cheaper than the ida rudder (i think the ida rudder with the steering bracket is $1200) but i don't know if it's any better or worse, I never used the ida rudder
