We picked up an old Sol Cat 18 from a friend. I thas been stored in bits and pieces in his garage for the last 20 years or so. The boys and I bolted the hulls together and tied on the tramp. I went to pick up the trailer today, that was an all day affair getting the new tiers, bearings etc. DMV was closed so I still have 83 tags on it. Will try and load it up and sneak it into the lake tomorrow morning.
Uh Oh, That's bad news. That Sol Cal is going to sail so fast that'll be the end of that C25. Sigh. I finally went for a ride on a Hobie. I don't want to sail my little 13' any more. That Hobie was a blast. Talk about fast.
Dan, I already lost my older boy, 12 now, he crews on an Express 27 during our club race. I'm not fast enough for him. My younger son, 9, was just asked to crew for a Merrit 22. He and I went with them a couple of weeks ago when they were short handed and they liked the way he ran all over the place to get stuff for them, winch handles, whisker pole etc. They will sail with me at other times though.
Ironic, I've never seen a Cal Sol 18 before in my life, until yesterday when I helped a couple put theirs on the trailer. What a cool boat! There was nothing but multis yesterday at the lake, except for my little 13'er. People kept asking me what boat I had and I replied, "The real sail boat!".
The boys and I took it out for its maiden voage yesterday. fairly light winds so I thought we'd be fine. That boat screams. We had one slight mishape when Casey decided it would be fun to help his brother fall off. Got him back on and headed to see if my wife wanted to get on. The lower hull had a rooster tail... I heard the twang of the starboard shroud parting and the mast went down covering the younger. We sat around till some friends came out in our clubs committee boat for a tow in. Spend the rest of the day getting everything untangled and put away.
Don't know how available parts are for that boat, but I ordered a set of shrouds for my little boat from Defender.com. They have an order form on their web site that you can specify the length, wire size and the ends and they make it for you. They made my shrouds and shipped them in two days from Florida. I can't find the link to the order form, but if you email or call them they can send you the link. Defender is a great company.
lime green. We have been thinking of names, after describing what happened to the younger son to some of the people we sail with one suggested "Everett's Demise", it sounded funny, but not sure it would be a good name. I suggested "Green Flash" like the marine occurance, my wife liked that too.
Lime... Hmmm-this should be too easy... Years ago we were buying a yellow Mutineer, but suddenly got transferred. I was gonna paint a blue oval on each side with the letters "Chiquita".
Sol Cats are a kick in the pants to sail! Learning how to work the daggerboards was a bit of a learning curve though. I helped a guy rig his years ago with the help of a neighbor a couple of doors (docks?) down on the lake who had one as well. I think both of them were 20'? He'd just bought it and didn't know anything about sailing. I was sailing a 14' Venture Cat at the time. After we got it rigged I asked him if we could take it out on the lake to see how it handled. We took it out and zoomed around the lake for a while. After we got back in I asked him what he'd paid for it, $1k. I offered him my boat & $500, but he wasn't interested. He parked it in the reeds by his house, and I never saw the boat move again. I'd be willing to bet it's still there.

Could well be, but the old guy down the lake offered to help him learn his boat, he just never did (that I observed). I'd still like to have that boat. I really like our C-250, but a little rocket ship like a 20' Sol Cat would be really fun to have.
Well we got the new shrouds the other day, I think we will hit thelake with it this afternoon. The elder boy has a soccer injury, so not sure if we will let him on the boat. If we go I'll take some photos.
