I don't know anything about whisker poles other than what I've read on this forum so what I'm about to say may not be worth the time it takes to read.
Has anyone tried using a couple of 5 or 6' magnesium or aluminum concrete bull float handles as a whisker pole? They screw together very quickly, they're light weight, and are relatively cheap ($20 - $30/ea). It appears that it would not be too difficult to modify the ends with fittings designed for a regular whisker pole. The ends are pressed in on most models.
With the flexing pressures that a whisker pole has to handle, I would be apprehensive about using 2 poles that simply screw together. I would expect the joint to fail somewhat quickly.
You're probably correct. I do know that these handles get abused by concrete contractors on a regular basis and I've never seen them break at the threads before. I've even seen a concrete truck back partially over a 12' (2- 6" sections) and bend the handle down quite aways and the threads didn't break.
What's the normal diameter and length of a whisker pole for a C25?
I think 7'-14' is normal. I use a 6'-12' light air pole, and it works fine with my 110. IDEA: Put a Wanted post on Craigslist under boats. I'll bet dozens of sailors have suitable whisker poles that haven't been used in years, just sitting in lockers. I got mine that way for $10.
People make their own whisker poles out of all sorts of things. Personally I wouldn't do it due to the potential stress loads on the pole. We use a 6-12HD Forespar pole. Yes it was fairly expensive but it works, is sturdy and I feel safer using it.
The Forspar ADJ6-12 pole will work with the working jib on a C-25, and maybe the 135 genoa, but it is definitely too short for the 150 genoa. The pole diameter on that one is about 1" for the std 6-12 and 1.5" for the HD (heavy duty) pole. I use the ADJ6-12HD on our C-22, and I also have a fixed length pole for the C-22 that I made for racing, purchasing the end fittings first and then buying an aluminum extrusion from a local pipe supplier to match the fittings. My whisker pole for the C-25 is a Forspar ADJ7-15HD. It's a 3-section pole, diameter almost 2", that collapses to about 8'. Best price I found was at Defender, but it still was over $300.
It's worked great so far, already has the proper fittings, collapses to 6' for storage, comes with a cheesy lexan padeye... which I expect will break eventually.
