...Drag the kid home, and ask if she wants to risk the lives of potential rescuers if something goes wrong.

...or ask her whether there's some less inwardly-focused activity--something that might give to somebody else rather than taking--that might engage her with people rather than isolating her from them, and that might still feed her young ego. Notoriety doesn't always end up giving you what you want. Ask Tiger, who has probably lost his kids, with the whole world watching.

I was just reading the book Women Sailors & Sailors Women - yes a book all about the fairer sex in the history of sailing. The book describes all sorts of different paths taken in the old days by young lasses needing to make a way in the world for themselves.

Some girls became seamen at even younger ages - hiding their sex from their crewmates. They worked long hours, climbed rigging just like a grown man would and were paid for their services. Some even qualified for pensions after they retired even though they were found to be women - after the fact of course.

My point is that I think our society has extended the period of irresponsibility to the point where youth no longer have to be responsible citizens of the world nor do they respect the quality of life that they enjoy. "Hey, I can always move back in with Mom and Dad after I graduate from college." At some point in history, this 14 YO girl could have run away and sailed on a ship around the world and nobody would have cared. Kids much younger are mining landfills for scrap metal as we speak. Fascinating book. History provides perspective.

Oh, and calling her advanced and gutsy doesn't mean I think she's ready to cirum-nav, but this kind of dogged dertirmination is what she'll need when she is.

Don't get me started!

Ya think?

I see a very determined young lady who had the wherewithal to successfully make it from Switzerland to the Caribbean. I would call her advanced and gutsy.

It's not hard to buy a plane ticket -- after all, she had 3500 Euros cash!
My kids traveled unaccompanied across the oceans on a plane the first time when they were 7 and 10 then 2 more times before they were teenagers. (Divorce sucks!) That doesn't make them capable of the decisions necessary to be alone for many months -- especially on a small boat.
