Hey all I am leaving for Oceanside tomorrow morning (about 25 miles to weather from Mission Bay). Staying at the Oceanside yacht club Saturday night. Partying with my crew (fellow Catalina 25 owner from Arizona) and family who are driving down to take us to dinner. On Sunday we pick up 1 more crew (Catalina 250 owner) and race 38.5 nautical miles to San Diego Bay. There are 7 boats in my class including a Catalina 27 who always beats me. Winds should be a beam reach 6 to 8 going aft later in the day. I'll have my spinnaker and the new asym on board.
I'm excited, the weather is good (we've been over 100 F all week and its finally back down into the 80s.). We may see some fog. Rig is tuned, bottom cleaned, boat scrubbed and polished.
Took 3rd last year. Wish us luck! Photos and story to follow.
Well, the race was a DNF for us. We had great wind Saturday sailing up the coast to Oceanside. We had fun there and a nice dinner with my family. We had good wind today (Labor Day). Sunday, the day of the race, we had about 5 knots from the SW and we had a SE course. We worked real hard and kept the boatspeed in the mid 3s. In the afternoon, from 3 PM to 4 PM the wind built to 8 knots. It was supossed to go W and hit 10 but never did. We did keep pace with the smaller boats and had 5 boats in sight at 7 PM when we dropped out. By that time we had zero air and and were drifting S about 1.5 knots. I calculated a finish time about 2 AM, crew had to work Monday and drive back to Phoenix. We were 30 minutes from the slip in Mission Bay. Easy decision.
During the race, we covered 28 miles, and averaged 3.4 knots.
Thanks to Oceanside Yacht Club and Silver Gate Yacht club for a great weekend.
Next race is this weekend, a fully crewed race around the Coronado Islands. Should be another 30 mile ocean race, hopefully not a driftfest this time. 7 boats in our class including the Catalina 27 that always beats me.
