Anybody know the diameter of the shear pin in the kick up rudder? I'm pleased to report that it worked as designed but, now I have to replace it. I can't get at it to measure it without removing the rudder so, I'm hoping somebody knows. Anybody know of WM has them?
Of course, it happened at the worst possible time. Ever lose steering trying to get into your slip against the wind? I missed the slip and in an effort to avoid my neighbors boat, I back into the breakwall (sorta). While getting away from the breakwall, the rudder hit a rock and popped up.
That was after a brief sail where I hit 5 knots with just a mains'l pressed up against the shrouds on a close reach. Not a pretty sight but, I flew past a Hunter of about the same length!
Update: Went to Ida Sailor website and found them. 3/8" Delrin pins for $5.95. They want $14 to ship them - and that's for the cheapest ground shipping. They'll fit in a first class envelope and could be mailed for 42 cents. I hope WM has some.

I suspect Nylon is not as brittle as Delrin, so might not work as designed. Call or e-mail IDA and question them on their choice of shipping methods--although I'm not sure you can mail something 3/8" thick for 42 cents.
You're probably right, Dave. The Ida site mentions the ease that their shear pins break as opposed to nylon bending. If it bends when it should break, it could be a real problem. As to the shipping question, their $14 price was for the slowest method -- routine ground. Maybe they can't go for 42 cents but they could go in a priority mail envelope for a few bucks. Since the season for me is only a few weeks longer, I don't want to wait long for the pins (Yeah, I know, I shoulda had a spare). The overnight method was around $80!!!!!!! That's just ridiculous. I'll probably go with nylon for the short season remaining and hope for the best. I'll get the delrin pins, probably from Ida, later. I'll look around.
I'm pleased to report EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE from Ida Sailor. I sent them an e-mail last night and got a response back this morning. They're sending the pins for $5.99/package INCLUDING SHIPPING. Peter said he'd get them in the mail today!
Let me be clear -- they did this without my even mentioning my concerns over the shipping costs. I had just asked them about the pins before I found them on their website.
I'm still going to have to find something for this weekend though.
You might have them Saturday. USPS gets most everything from wherever to wherever in 2-3 days--I don't think they have a method (as UPS does) for taking longer.
