Looking for some advice: My fiancee and I are moving to Monterey and looking to buy our first boat. I've had my eye on Catalina 250s but I'm a little worried about the size. I'm not looking to brave any storms or go too far off shore, but I also don't want my sailing days severely limited by "standard" area conditions. Does anyone have experience in the area that could offer some useful suggestions?
Mike we have members sailing 25's in much more extreme conditions than Monterey. Catalina 25's are extremely safe. However, of course a larger boat offers a better ride and I would suggest buying the largest boat you can afford. Keep us posted. Steve A
I don't think you'll be dissapointed. I've had mine out in 30kts with big chop and she did fine. I also had her out in 8 foot seas- big swells and rollers and she did great. Yes you will have to reef early and add 200 lbs of ballast to the bow but she is safe.
Mike Since Monterrey Bay is a protected marine habitat, are there any restrictions on the type of bottom paint you can use on your sailboat? I've heard that California has more stringent hazmat codes, and adopts them earlier, than other states so that's why I'm asking.
Since you can sail 365 days a year, how do often do you have to re-apply bottom paint, esp if the biocide is limited? 2X or 3X per year?
