The sailing club the admrial and I are in have various trips we go on as a group. They include the Delta (California), Montery - Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Hunington lake. In the past we have also goen to Point Reys, and Catalina. I think Lake Tahoe would be cool too.
Matt I am planning a trip to Sea of Cortez this winter with my C 25. Trailer it down then sail down to Cabo.<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> The sailing club the admrial and I are in have various trips we go on as a group. I'd be very interested, since I bought my boat planning to do just that, but haven't yet. I'd love to take a trip to Lake George, FL, but I haven't been able to find any info on where to put in. When I was a kid spending summers there, I remember the water being almost crystal clear.
Stink potters can get there from the St Johns River, but with all the fixed bridges, a sail boat would have to be trailered.

I can think of a couple of discussions that could be very helpful.
I have read bits and pieces of discussions of do's and don'ts of trailering and the advise contained therin was helpful.
I must say in my rather limited experience at trailering, I have found it difficult to find ramps that I would be comfortable with as a destination sight unseen. Charts of course show locations but don't give much other info other than what can be extracted visually from the chart.
It is nice to cruise knowing that there are places at your destination that you can stay and what type places they are.
Just for those of you who trailer. I envy you ability to see so many wonderful places. Its wonderful to see the country in such a way. For those not aware there is a very good site at www.trailersailor.com that deals with the topic. The links on that site cover dozens of boat designs and likt to their web sites. Take time to visit the site and explore it. One last thought. Next year when your planing a trip into my area please call or drop an E mail. Nothing beats local knoledge and I love meeting other sailers.
Saler, where are you located. I haven't been to Mexico with a boat, but there is a member of our club that goes there quite often. He has 6 boats, ranging from a snipe to something 43'. The six are located from Merced, CA (main location) to SF bay area, to baja. His most recient is a Cat22 he got for a song. The winter trips the club does include SF, not sure of the date for this year yet. Doug, it has been a dream of mine to go to your area since the late 70's. Hopefully I can get the admrial to go or at least OK it for me. Good sailing and easy winter projects to all
I have less than 2 years left on shore duty, then I have to find another boat. I would love to go to Bangor, but some friends of ours went there recently and have convinced my wife that it rains everyday and the sun never shines. Another friend of mine just went back there after 3 years here in Kings Bay, and couldn't wait to get back. He sails a Catalina 30 and tells me that sailing Puget Sound is wonderful. I'm supposed to get out there for a visit. What is the least rainy season there? I'm going to try and convince my wife that it isn't as bad as she thinks.
Tray, I just came back from a cruise on Lake George. While the lake is not "crystal Clear" it is a clean lake. Problem is, there are no sailboat friendly ramps on the lake itself. We put in at Astor on SR 40 south of the lake. There is a well maintained double ramp with a staging area and safe parking across the street. The bridge at Astor is a bascule bridge that will open on hailing. From there it is a 3 mile motor to the lake itself. After entering the lake you can sail to Silver Glen Springs or Salt Springs on the west shore. CAUTION: Both springs are very crowded with stinkpotters on the weekends and even worse on holiday weekends. Silver Glen Springs has a small cove just past a privete lodge on the south side of the run that we anchored in. Unless there are several boats there it is a very nice spot. The Lake itself is very shallow and when the wind picks up it is not a very comfortable place to be and can be dangerous during a Florida Thunderstorm. If you need any other info contact me.
Thanks, Bruce. I'm very familiar with Silver Glen. My family used to spend 2 weeks of every summer there until it got shut down. My grandfather started taking my Mom there in the 50s. I went back to see it after it reopened to day use, and it just isn't the same. I'm sure it's better for the environment now, but I sure miss the old days there.
I remember all the boats that would raft up in the inlet, and now that you mention it, I don't recall any sailboats. Do you know anything about Ockochobee?
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Matt, I am in Reno, Nv. I have a Catalina 25 swing keel. I plan to leave here December 1st. Trailer down to Santa Rosalia and then sail south towards Cabo San Lucas, costal hopping. Plan on spending 1 or 2 months or as long as I'm having fun. Saler, If you are comming down 99 in CA to get there let me know and you could take a pit stop here. Saturday night our club had its end of the year party and I was elected crusing and social director. I think I would like to try a trip to Tahoe. Does anyone have any info on sailing there, ie. ramps and guest slips? Thanks
Tray, all I know about Lake Okechobee is that it is not a good place to be in a storm. I know that the Pahokee Yacht Club has a regatta on the lake every year and that the Pahokee Marina can be reached at 561 924-7832 and they should be able to give you all the info on the lake.
I live in South Lake Tahoe and have sailed on Lake Tahoe for 25 years. Right now the lake is about six feet below it's usual level and some facilities are unuseuable. The ramp at the Tahoe Keys Marina was ok for a swing keel last month when I took mine out for the winter. I suspect it is still ok. Next spring and early summer it will be better depending on the amount of snow this winter and dredging in the channel. I would not be able to get into the marina with my keel down right now. I suspect the guest docks at the Marina are expensive. There is a great boat camp at Emerald Bay. Mooring balls and campsites on shore. If you want to know more let me know.
Wait, When does your season usually start? May-June? The Emerald cove thing sounds great. Is it a CA state park thing or private? The last time I was in Tahoe with a boat was 1977 or so and the water was at a record low then. My dad and I had our Santana then and we had to motor out quite a distance before we could put the rudder on the water was so low. I think the Cat would handle the lake a lot better than the little Santana too. Thanks for the info. I will get together with another guy from the club and hash things out. I take it Tahoe Keys Marina is in the phone book. Hopefully I can get some people to trailer there boats up to your lake. It is a little ride away from here, closer than Baja though. Thanks again

I used to put the boat in by May 1, but now aim for mid June. Too many times I was looking at it with snow on it in May and hurrying to get in wasn't worth it. Emerald Bay is a State park. As long as the channel at the marina gets dredged (they plan to do it soon) the low water level will not bother a sk C25. It helps to have rollers on the trailer when launching and retrieving the boat. Tahoe Keys Marina is in the book. They are very expensive ($25, in and out). Their slip charges are $20/foot/month. A good arguement against monopolies. I started out at the lake with a Santana 21. A nice boat but too small. I now have a C25 and a C36. Maybe I'm done with buying larger boats. My wife hopes so. If you have any more questions I can be reached at griswold@ltcc.edu
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Matt Thanks for the invite but I am going down 95 to 6 then down 395. Basically around the sierras and then down the desert. Thank you any way, I will update you when I get back in Feburary. Tahoe is a great place to visit, Lake is down to it's natural rim right now I'm sure by spring early summer it will be better. Let me know if you want to plan a trip. I keep my boat at Homewood, Obexters has a good ramp and a little less expensive $15. My email is saler73@hotmail.com if you want more info.
