I might have found my Catalina 25. She is an 82, standard rig, swing keel, and there is one odd modification about it that I thought I would see if any other C25 owners have done.
An engine was installed aft of the steps to the cockpit, and the prop shaft comes down through the bottom of the boat directly aft of the keel. It is an older engine, a 1977 OMC, 15hp, which allegedly runs great.
Has anyone else heard of a C25 modified in this way? I don't race, so I'm not too concerned with speed, but I don't want to be terribly slow either.
What you describe sounds like an old OMC "Saildrive". Before you purchase this boat, I urge you to contact Craig Cook, who posts on the Trailer Sailor BBS. As I recall, he had such an engine installation in a C-25 swing keel, and I don't remember him having much good to say about it.
Issues you might want to investigate include:<ul><li>Parts availability.</li><li>Corrosion issues (past, present, and future).</li><li>Marine growth fouling.</li><li>Hull integrity (<b><i>how big a hole?!</i></b>).</li><li>Gasoline fuel safety.</li><li>Fuel milage.</li></ul> Good luck!
Thanks Leon. The current owner did call it a saildrive. I didn't understand what he meant at first, I had never heard of such a thing. I'll try to contact Craig Cooke and see what he has to say about it.
There aren't too many sail drive powered C25s around. Craig did have one for a few years and would be a good source of info.
The only other OMC saildrive that I've seen personally is in a mid '70s San Juan 28 that's at the same marina that I'm at. The couple who own the SJ are out just about every weekend May thru Oct. And, the boat is in the water year round. They have not had any significant problems with the setup that I'm aware of.
That-having-been-said, a professional survey - including engine analysis - is called for.
I dont like the sail drive. Its a poor atempt to put an inboard engine into the C-25. They are very expensive to replace and the access isn't the best. If you do decide to purchase this boat I recomend getting a good engine survey. Not the same as a boat survey. Someone very familiar with engines.
Well I decided against the C25 with the OMC saildrive. I did some research and most of what I heard indicated that parts would be very, very difficult to get.
I did find out that Honda makes a new saildrive, called the Saildrive 280, or something like that, but it costs $6,000.00, that's without installation of course.
So anyway, I found another C25 SR SK near me, but the guy wants $12,000 for it. It's an 86, and has a 1999 9.9 engine, furling jib, the usual amenities, and a trailer.
Ben it sounds about right if the boat is bristol. Do some comparing at www.boats.com or www.yachtworld.com or www.boattrader.com there should be plenty of listings to compare it with. Here is a bit tip for you. When and if you do purchase a boat you need TWO sales contracts. One for all the personal gear I.E. motor/dinghy/electronics/toys/furnishings/safty gear. The other contract should be just for the boat. Deduct the gear value from the boat total value. You should not be liable to pay sales tax on anything except the boat. Example inflatable dinghy 1200$ Motor 1500$ GPS 400$ deduct these from the total boat price.
