OK, I broke down a bought a Spot. It's a portable GPS transciever that will alert your frinds and family that you are OK, or in trouble, and will initiate a search and rescue as well. One of the more fascinating aspects of signing up - yes they want a C note for a years worth of coverage, was that you could buy world evac insurance for $7.95.... Done! The optional track me feature allows folks to see where you are at all times. It runs on AA lithium batteries forever unless activated and can be used on land or anywhere cell phones don't work.... Truly a cheap EPIRB, but not a substitute of course. www.findmespot.com

I think a great deal for cruisers! Aaahhh, one day .............
I have one and have used it for several months on sailing trips, backpacking trips, and on several other adventures. It works well. I really like having it for single-handing, I keep it clipped on my pfd so I can use it if I take an accidental swim.

Racers are not using it for events like the Transpac. But it works fine coastal. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
There are some grey areas on the map, but their sat coverage is worldwide - land and sea... We know of one boat where everyone gets one. It's a proprietary gps system with their own birds.
Correction... South Africa and the Pacific are really no mans land on their map... Can't do a transpac - it doesn't go quite that far.
