Vern, the first page-2nd if you count IPhones search page-of my phone is completely filled with sailing stuff.I have other sailing stuff scattered on the other 8 pages. Navionics is the 1st icon on that first page. I too find it invaluable and accurate. I tried another and it was lacking detail. Navionics is a great program and I was lucky enough to get it for $3 or $4 in the summer when they had a special. I do have a handheld which uses the same software but the screen is much smaller than my Iphone. I can charge the phone on my boat but I am looking into an extended power/battery. Steve A

Dave, thanks for the link. Nice article. As I have said, I love my IPhone. It has got quite a bit of info related to sailing. I must have over 25 apps. Some are duplicates like weather and wind but I use them all. I have never been an Apple person but the IPhone has sure changed that. Steve A
I never could figure why a phone had to be more than a phone. I have an LG 3G phone from AT&T but have not had the urge to do anything but make phone calls.
I use my cell on Lake Superior to let my wife know how I'm doing. She likes to hear that I'm still afloat. I lose coverage five miles out though. I once called from a position 30 miles from home and got a Canadian operator asking for my Visa number. That was surprising.
My boat is chuck full of navigaion technology so I wouldn't need a phone that I would be afraid to lose overboard and therefore wouldn't use anyway.
Sail had the Iphone article too, but I don't have an Iphone. The MacENC developer ported to the Iphone to give a full featured backup nav system, but I guess the demands make screen refreshes a little slow. It also links over wireless to connect to MacENC if you are fortunate enough to have a Mac running in the cabin, which I do, and I can link up with my Ipod Touch. That makes it a cockpit nav repeater without loading up the little processor. With my bluetooth gps receiver, Ipod Touch, Macbook Pro, Etrex handheld, Garmin Ique gps PDA, and paper charts, I think I may be competing NASA on redundancy.
I found Shipfinder a while ago too, meant to mention it here & simply forgot. When our guests from Zurich were here, we took them to the top of the Space Needle, it was very cool to watch the screen update while checking out the ships out in Elliott Bay with the spotting scopes provided for free.
There's a free version if you just want to see how it works, but I bought the live version, which has live AIS data, which would be important to me when I'm crossing the shipping lanes in the dark / rain / fog / snow, etc. I also bought a waterproof pouch that I can use my phone right through, and it floats, which I hope to never test for real.
Not to beat a dead horse (or in this case thread) but the best iPhone app on my phone, hands down, is MotionX GPS. Has a great compass feature that reads magnetic if <5mph then GPS over that. Has readings for VMG, a map, import/export, ipod integration, tracks, auto track updates that can be automatically sent via twitter or facebook, it was developed apparently by a guy while on a TransPac race... or something like that. I highly advise checking into it if you like to sail!
Darren, Agree, its a great app and for free as well. I too like the compass feature. It just one more tool. BTW, I saw a brand new sailing nav app w/ nautical charts. Haven't seen any reviews yet and I already have 2 others I am happy with. Have you or anyone noticed how slow everything now is with the new OS 4! I hate it. Steve A
