We usually wait for some serendipitous event to name out boats. A former dock neighbor's boat was struck by lighting. After repairs they renamed it "High "Voltage"
Just had a conversation with a friend in which I said "...well I have the boat - so I've got that going for me." He suggested I rename the boat "Gunga Lunga" as in what the Dali Lama was supposed to have said to Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack. Sorry - has nothing to do with pirates, just made me laugh.

Here's some questions for name choosing. what will it sound like on the radio? What will it sound like when the Coast Guard or Home land security calls? or when you call the Harbor master? Real story: A few years ago we were monitoring #16 and heard a distress call from someone on a 50 footer that had run up on a rock near Bellinham WA. I'm still not sure of their boats name but it sounded like "A ah oom awah alo wam chu" or something. For the next several hours we heard numerous attempts by coast guard and others trying to say this name on the radio, finally referring to them as "the vessel aground off cyprus island" It was no big deal this day, but in bad weather and poor radio reception you may not want to be adding to the confusion by having a goofy name. Of course it all depends where you boat. My current boat boat is named "Sunshine" and my dinghy is "Lollipop" (don't go there, this is important stuff) I've always liked names that have "Revenge" or "Warrior" in the name Happy naming. TJ "Lollipop Revenge" oh yeah
It should be personal and easy to say. Some years ago I promised my then very young daughter that we would name our next boat after our dog that had died. That is how Cat's Meow and dingy Purr became Pearl and Grrrr (as in growl).

Are you painting the hull? (Just kidding--DON'T.) Any story behind that?
