Since everyone gave such great advice on cruising Lake Erie...how about some for California. My wife and I plan to take the boat to CA in June for 10-14 days of sailing. Problem is, we know we want to visit Catlina Island, but where from there? The channel islands look beautiful, remote and close, but as this is our first trip anywhere but an inland lake, we don't want to much difficulty. Can anyone maybe suggest a sample itinerary. We plan to launch from the LA area, but are VERY flexible. Time is abundant, but no more than 14 days on the water to allow for out 12 hour drive from NM. HELP!! Open to all suggestions. We handle our boat well, reef early and always stay within our limitations. We also are not afraid to rough-it in the name of peace and beauty, but don't mind a marina with a nice restuarant, bar and shower. Looking for all ideas. Thanks.

As a native SoCalifornian, figured I'd better put in my two cents worth. Yes, definitely go to Catalina Is. Lots to see & plenty of good anchorages. Weather in June is still tender, but should be a good time.
The other 'channel' islands are nice, but, you are correct, as they are remote & fairly inaccessable. Plus the weather up around the corner can get pretty nasty.
Not sure what your range is, but you may want to visit Newport Beach area. Nice bay, lots to see & do. Minimal visitor facilities, though. Do you have any yacht club recipricals ?? That always helps.
Finally, try t get down to Mission Bay or San Diego bay. Both REALLY nice & sail friendly. I'm sure between now & then you will be able to easily fill the time.

Instead of LA, head south to Dana Point (good launch facilities and nice guest docks) for your jumping off spot. I always try to hit Avalon on a Monday as it's easier to get a mooring. Some people hang out, others sail around the island. Most coves have moorings. I think that you can still anchor in Cat Harbor. There is a great SoCal large page format chart book that has plenty of detail (headings, distance, etc.) on all of the harbors from Ensanada to Oxnard plus plenty of detail on Catalina. I'm sure someone on this forum can provide the correct title and source.

Snorkling is great! Take plenty of sunscreen and rig a sun cover over the cockpit. A dingy is desirable. I've used more than a few $25.00 vinyl jobbers and gave 'em away when I left the island!

I live in Durango and keep a C-25 in Mission Bay. Curious as to where in NM you live that it only takes 12 hours (towing) to get to the coast.

Check out this link http://www.scico.com/twoharbors/mainboat.html, it will take you to the Two Harbors, Catalina site. Lots of information about boating to the island. They also have a printed document called "Catalina Island boaters guide to Two Harbors and coves outside Avalon". It has lots of good information about anchorages, restaurants, rentals, facilities, etc. I got my copy at the boat show, but I suspect they would be happy to mail you one. I show there phone number as 310 510 0303.

Be prepared for fog. So. Cal is known for "June Gloom". It can be very wet and drippy. I hpoe this helps.

As for recommended itinerary, I'd launch from Cabrillo Beach ramp, and hit Avalon first (usually a beam reach). Then go counterclockwise around the island to White's Cove (not far from Avalon). Then Two Harbors. Then Emerald Bay. Then around the West End to Catalina Harbor. Then Little Harbor (my new favorite, but requires anchoring). Then continue around the island to Avalon or back to the launch ramp.

I wouldn't mess with any of the mainland sites (Newport, San Diego, etc.) because to me the island is so much nicer and you can see those places by car if you wish.

I've often thought it would be fun to cruise the other Channel Islands, but most locals who have done it have recommended to me to stick with Catalina unless you have a lot more time to explore (or hide from weather) or you live closer. From New Mexico (and limited time), I'd pick one or the other.

The chart book Dennis referred to is "ChartGuide of Southern California", but I think it's out of print. I don't have the whole book, but I have copies of all the pages you will need and can make copies for you if you wish.

In any case, a radar reflector can be a good idea.

I do have Maptech Chartkit #12 for Southern CA.
I also have Brian Fagan's Cruising Guide for Southern, CA and Channel Islands.

Think we are prepared in that respect.

A gentleman from our local club suggested Cabrillo Beach for a launch point also, so we seem to be on the right track.

Someone mentioned the weather in June...will still be a little cool?

For Durango...

We live in Albuqueruqe and it is 812 miles to Cabrillo Beach from our front door. (OK, that's about 13 hours with a 60 mph average).

I sincerely appreciate everyone's input. We always wanted to go with our Catalina 22, but just didn't quite trust the swing keel on the open water.

Would love to hear any more suggestions or helpful hints. I am definately one who can listen to the voices of experience without being offended. Also, I know my limitations and when some outside help is useful.

Here's a suggestion/hint, If you plan to sail your Catalina to Catalina Island, then before you go you must learn how to spell Catalina. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

No.....I need to stop getting too excited about sailing to Catalinan, Catlina or where ever and let my typing fingers catch up with my brain! And I'm sure I can read the locations on the chart, spelled correctly or not.
