Hey Jim Baumgart, been thinking about you for a couple days. I know the storms have been bad, lots of damage. How's things going in your neck of the woods? Hope all is well.

We've had 7 inches of rain in a couple of days at the house. I had a meeting the previous night at the Silver Gate Yacht Club to work on planning the Nationals. We were seeing torrential rain, and the annemometer at the club was reading 43 knots. San Diego Bay was seeing waves 5 feet through the mooring field. Offshore, the waves are 14 to 17 right now.
After the meeting, I spent the night on Indiscipline (in the slip, of course). Its a great time to find deck leaks! The boat is dry, but I have some kind of leak into the head (toilet) area. There is a little water on the floor. I hope it is not through the mast base.
The boat was pitching and yawing all night, halyards slapping. I really enjoyed it and slept like a baby. For some reason I love curling up with a book, lighting the oil lamp, turning on the heater, and being all warm and cozy below during a big storm. In the morning I got up, took a walk to see the waves, and came to work where I have a locker and shower (that makes overnights so much easier).
All the Fleet 7 boats and others on our docks are sitting easy. I check them most nights. One dock over a roller furling jib came lose and shredded. I have doubled my docklines and wrapped a line around the covered main.
Last night around 1 AM we had a massive thunderstorm right over the house and we got huge winds for about 30 minutes. So far no damage at the house. We live on a small "island" and have a creek all around the property. We live out in the boondocks and have 2.5 acres and a small farm-like place with massive trees. Right now the creek is a river and is up to, but not quite over, the main bridge. I have all my stuff in case we can't get home tonight.
Good deal Jim, I didn't hear the word "mud" mentioned either so I guess you're not near any of the burned hills that are the cause of this. And I guess the storms are about at an end for the time being so the swells should subside after a few days too. What you've been getting in storms we've been getting in cold here in FL with something like 9 freezing nights (very rare) but finally is 78 to 80 degrees today and should have a good week-end. Hopefully I'll get Bamboo out Sunday.
mud is not a worry for me, or for most anyone in San Diego since the main fires were in LA this year. However our worry is water coming over the bridge and preventing access or washing out the bridge. About 10 familes live down the canyon where I'm at, so we're not a real high priority for service restoration.
Right now we officers of San Diego All Catalina Association are voting to cancel tomorrow's planned first race of the season.
