Splashed Pearl yesterday and brought her to the condo. I bought a couple of 2x4's x 10' and a bolt and built an A-frame. I've always used a gin pole before, but that can be quite an adventure alone and in a breeze. Pearl's PO cast a plastic receiver that is permanently attached to the base of the mast that the gooseneck end of the boom fits snugly into; the other end has 4 stainless tabs for the jib halyard, mainsheet (to the stemhead fitting), and two stabilizing lines with springs that connect to the forward chainplates. It works okay with two people and no breeze, but it's not so good with one person. Then a condo neighbor, a former sailor, offered to help. I explained that I was trying something new to me that reportedly works well with one person, but I would appreciate him being there in case I had a problem. The mast went up like a charm! My neighbor said he's owned a Hobie, a Catalina 22, and an S-2 27 and never saw a mast go up that smoothly and offered congratulations for the person who thought it up. Anyway, she's mostly rigged - I lost a turnbuckle on the trip down, but that's not such a bad thing since I have been slowly replacing her tubulars with open ones. We will have thunderstorms tomorrow, but she should get her sails on on monday. I'll be ready to go just in time for what the locals call turning colder - back down into the 60's. Really looking forward to sailing next week.
