I have received some great advice before from the forum, so I'm going to the well again with another question... I purchased my 1995 250 about 3 months ago. The boat had an 8 HP Tohatsu long shaft engine when I bought it. Recently I found a great deal on a Honda 9.9, power tilt and all; so I bought it. The Tohatsu looks downright puny compared to the Honda - and it is. The Tohatsu weights 65 lbs and the Honda 135. So here's my question - the stock mount on the 250 only comes down the transom about 8 inches. That was fine for the Tohatsu, but the mount for the back side of the Honda goes down 13 inches, well beyond the mount on the transom of the 250. So the Honda mounting bracket is unsupported for 5 inches at the bottom. That scares me a little. I was thinking buying some starboard and bolting it to the transom to support that last 5 inches of Honda bracket and possibly thru bolting the Honda to the transom. So is my concern unfounded? Or should I buy the starboard?
Ron, I'm not quite sure I'm following what you need, but I'll tell you what I did when I mounted my new Tohatsu 9.8, replacing my considerably lighter Johnson 8 2 stroke.
I mounted it on a Garelick scissors mount which was about a foot high for the mounting bracket. I put the bolts through two pieces of 1/4" aluminum plate on the inside of the transom, and a 3/8" piece of UHMW plastic (cutting board) to spread the load. Ron, I replaced the starboard mount for a larger piece without much trouble. IIRC a cutting board from Harbor Freight and Tool was used to make the new. In my situation, more mount was needed laterally towards starboard to shift the motor as far as possible to assist with turning.
As to bolting, I've a Honda on mine though it does not have power tilt and have trailered it without any bolting from Texas to the Great Lakes many times without incident or any sign of a problem.
If it is of any help, I changed from a Nissan 8 to the Tohatsu 9.8 with no problems in mounting or turn radius. In fact the Tohatsu actually turns farther port & starboard than the Nissan did because of the tiller arm location on the Nissan.
