Thirty-six days until Splash Down (theoretically)! Anyway, got a piece of mail and wonder if anyone else has gotten the same thing and if I'm missing some fine print. Evidently I can get 1 year of Sail Magazine (and a hat!!!) for only $8; or 2 years for $15! Seems too good to be true. I received Sail Magazine a handful of years ago and enjoyed it, would like to get it again if this deal isn't some clever ploy to get more than $15 over two years.
I have taken SAIL for about 6 years now utilizing their "special" offers. Take them up on it and when they send you a renewal hold out for a similar rate. Never renew with the first renewal notice. SAIL has goten a lot more in tune to the small, economically challenged sailor in the past few years.
I got a free year added to my subscription with my paid admission to the boat show the last 2 years.
Magazines count on advertisers to make their money. The subscrition fees they collect probably only cover the postage of sending the magazine. They get paid on a "cost per thousand" basis. So, the more people they can tell advertisers they have looking at their ads, the more they can charge. That explains why Latitudes and Attitudes, for example, is available free online. Their number of hits each month turns into dollars for Bob Bitchin.
I've gotten the deal for years, along with the hat. It's a cheapie, but it'll do fine. While the mag goes to excess with articles on expensive giant boats, it has a lot of good info on dignhy sailing, line, sails and other equipment, and advice from the big guys: Don Casey and Nigel Calder to name a few.
Sail and their parent company filed for bankruptsy and is restructuring - I mean hurting.... We dropped Latts and Atts - after all we are already living the lifestyle, but we keep BW Sailing - last year.. SAIL and Cruising World. I'd go for a year at a time, they might not be there next year, paper and ink is suffering big time.
I presently subscribe to Sailing and Sail magazines. I prefer Sailing magazine. My thought was to not renew my Sail magazine when it comes up for renewal later this year. I do not recall receiving offers mentioned - $8 for 1 yr, $15 for 2 yrs. At that rate, I would probably renew. I will have to watch for that offering !! Thanks for the info ! Also, good info about the filing for bankruptcy and recommendation to perhaps subscribe for 1 year and see what happens.
I also get the Wooden Boat magazine. I still have this thought about eventually building a small sailboat. I was interested in Shell Boats Lucky 13 design/kit. Also, Chesapeake Light craft 15' Skerry,m though, a bit larger than I wanted but they not only have the kit but offer a week class to get you 70% construction complete for procrastinators. Building a small boat may never happen for me...but I like thinking about it...and I like the magazine.
Okay...so today I received my notice from Sail Magazine "Last Chance To Renew" (but my subscription does not end till SEP 2010). The best they are offering me is: $14.97 for 1 year $24.97 for 2 years and $34.97 for 3 years.
We subscribed to Crusing World Mag for past 2 years as part of our Strictly Sail tickets.
When you order the tickets, they indicate that the subscription is worth $12. But when you get the tickets, it indicates that the subscripion has a $7.00 value.
