5 years.. If it were me not an 84 but an 86? or better What ever year it was that they got rid of the aluminum frame windows and the plaid interior. The plus will be all the other upgrades will already be in place.
I found an article but it didn't really give details about the differences except for the fuel locker but it did state that there were substantial upgrades in 80, 82, 86 and 88. Is there somewhere that the upgrades are listed? Thanks, Ed
Oh well... There's another one out there for you. The key upgrades that come to mind between 1979 and my 1985 were:
1. Fuel locker molded into the cockpit settee (not worth trying to do yourself).
2. Fin keel changed from bare cast iron to encapsulated lead, and from mild steel bolts to stainless. (IMHO, this was a bigger deal cosmetically than functionally, and only when the boat is on the hard.)
3. Welded stainless spreader sockets instead of cast aluminum (can be upgraded Catalina Direct parts).
4. Stem fitting that with tang that extends down the bow and through-bolts on the "pointy part" (also a worthwhile upgrade from CD).
5. Outboard bracket moved to starboard. (...a matter of preference)
6. Opening ports in the head area--people have upgraded these.
7. Proper seacocks and through-hull fittings with flush plates outside the hull, replacing bronze pipes stuck to the inside of the hull--also an easy upgrade.
8. Running lights on the bow pulpit and stern rail instead of the "whale eyes" in the hull.
The next significant changes as I recall, after my boat, were the wing keel replacing the swing ('87), and the balanced rudder (which I bought). Then in 1989, there was the redesign of the deck mold and hull liner--the latter taking advantage of the lack of the swing keel option by lowering and flattening the floor. I think the frameless windows came in 1988--not sure.

I have an 87 with the frame less windows that is why I was leaning toward around 86. It seems to me that just when Catalina finally got all the bugs/improvements done in the 25s they stopped production. Go figure.

A few comparable Com-Pac 25s sold in the high 40s, while 25' Clorox bottles were in the 20s and below. The '89-90 C-25 is something of a rare gem!
