Toward the end of last season I noticed my spreaders were quite wobbly and drooped a bit. I plan to drop my mast here soon (if the snowstorms ever quit) and look at them. I remember reading somewhere that the problem could be where they attach to the mast and it is my understanding that there is a nylon spacer that fits into the collar and it "embraces" the spreader. Has anyone replaced or worked on their spreaders with the same issue?
I wrapped mine with leather, taped them and jammed then back into the brackets. the leather stiffened them up, no dropping, cheap fix, and adjustable. I did the repair in a chair in under 30 min. I also purchaced new hardware to replace the cotter pin, the hardware was stainless, with washers on top, between, and on the bottom, with a locknut, then a round nut, then taped.
Karen, My boat had a damaged spreader when I bought it. It was cracked a fatigued at the mast in addition to both of them being "droopy". The drawings on this website indicated two different types of brackets for attachment of the spreader. I don't know what type Chris has, but my boat has the "blade" type indicated on drawing A-2 revised 5-15-81. I purchased new spreaders at Rig Rite, Inc. K-SP22 for $69.00 per side. I'm not sure if Rig Rite has a diagram of the cross section, but when I got mine the internal extrusions in the spreader matched up perfectly with the blade on the mast fitting. They slid right on and I cotter pinned and taped them in place for a very rigid connection. My suggestion is to see what type mast fitting you have before deciding how to proceed. I think Chris has an early boat and mine is a later boat.
