Thank you to all that gave us advice on our Chesapeak Bay trip. We had 2 1/2 days to travel from Deltaville,Va to Deale,Md. Friday,March 25,I thought I was still in Wisconsin. 36 degrees,30-45kn winds,8-10'seas...not for sailing. Saturday,"better" forcast,20-25kn winds,40 degrees,5-7' seas, with wind shifting north to east. We left at 0800,1 reef in main, headsail also reefed making 5-6kns on a beat. Winds started to shift about 1600 to the east and promptly died. I guess that was a good thing because we motor sailed across the Potomac in smooth water. the wind then continued to the south and piped up to about 20. We decided to make for Solomon, Md. We knew it would be a stretch, We arrived at Solomon about 2215, cold and tired. The 1989 Beneteau 35 handled beautifully, thanks to the care given by the previous owner. All systems worked perfectly, we did have to rely on the GPS especially at Solomons. Of course Sunday turned out to be as bad as Friday and were not able to continue. My son will have to finish the trip next weekend. We spent Sat. Night at the Holiday Inn in Solomons. Even though we were pretty busy during our trip, I became very jealous of the great sailing area you are blessed with. I know I will be spendind more time with my son.
Jack Schafer, previous owner of 2ndWind 250WB #106,
It sounds like you guys did great to make it that far in those conditions. My friends in Maryland tell me the weather out there is improving this week. If it holds up through the weekend, your son should be able to make it the rest of the way easily. It must be nice to buy a boat and take it out in those conditions and find that nothing broke and everything worked perfectly.
My son purchased the boat last November and it wasn't put in the water until 3 days befor we left. I was a little concerned because we had not even sailed around the harbor before we left. We only had that Eriday to check out all the systems. The only problem we had was that the wind direction was backwards on the meter, but Sunday AM we figured out how to adjust it. It was quite evident which way the wind was blowing anyway! Now back home and going to have to get 2ndWind ready to sail. the Ice is gone and the docks are going in. The DNR makes every one remove their docks every year. quite a good business here. Our association has a 24 slips dock and costs about $5000 for in and out.
I don't know what the justification is, possibly a danger to ice boats, or "that's how it has always been done". We have over 800 docks on the lake. All "H" fixtured set into cribs and painted white.
Too bad you couldn't finish the trip on Sunday. I was sailing on Sunday on a southerly course down the Eastern Bay, which is across the Chesapeake Bay to the east of Deale. There were 15 knot winds from the southeast that kept me on my toes. I tucked in a reef and beat to windward with my 110 jib. The sky was really beautiful when the sun peeked through the clouds in the morning.
If you had the same winds down the Bay where you were, it would have been an easy broad reach from Solomons Island to Deale.
The temperature on Sunday was only in the 50's, though, so I dressed for a ski trip, and was warm and cozy. I enjoyed my first time anchoring in Tilghman Creek. On Monday morning after a night of rain, the wind was gone, and I just motored back up the Bay to the Bay Bridge and the Magothy River.
I cancelled 2 more days of sailing that I had planned. At least I got Saturday and Sunday out on the water. This was my first circumnavigation of Kent Island.
Jack - It's nice to hear that your son's boat handled so well. Happy sailing back home!
