Greetings. After a great deal of homework and sifting through forum messages, reviews etc. I have decided that this is the boat for my family. I live in Denver and would like to find a C-250 wk in the right shape for the right price. Thanks in advance for your advice, tips, and leads.
Nice boat. It is #444 and the Nauti Duck is #443! They probably knew each other back in the factory.
It looks like it is in very good shape and the sail inventory is very nice. If you go for this boat my only advice would be to upgrade to a balanced rudder (if they haven't already). There are no photos of the rudder but if they upgraded I think they would have listed it. New C250 balanced rudder is $650. Catalina made the change in the 20001 model. The stock (unbalanced) rudder is fine and we have used ours for three seasons. In higher winds, though, the C250 benefits from a balanced rudder that also has more surface area.
I plan on going to take a look at this one. Assuming it is as advertised and doesn't have the balanced rudder, bimini, or any other upgrades such as electronics or lazyjacks - what price range should this boat in. You may PM me if this is a forum no - no to ask. I noticed some east coast boats (on in VA on this forum) that have a lot of upgrades and are asking mid teens. Thanks all.

The boat in Colorado includes a trailer, which is a high $$ extra, so $20K may not be unreasonable. I've been on the boat that you referenced in Virginia, and posted some comments. Its price is fantastic, but I also know that he is not going to come down from asking price. At that price I expect that he will sell it very soon - it's about the best deal out there right now.
I bought the one on that site that is listed in Riverside, New Jersey.
There is value in buying a boat that's "in your backyard" already, so the one in Colorado may be worth it for you. Sometimes the extras in boats are improperly/poorly installed, so while they may look good on paper, they can sometimes detract from the value. As an example, I saw a C250 last fall that had an extra porthole that was improperly placed so that the cockpit floor was flexing excessively. No matter how much caulk you use, it will leak forever because of the way the fiberglas moves. On another boat someone cut a hole from the fuel locker into the aft berth to route electrical lines - a huge, hazardous mistake. Once you cut fiberglas out it can be impossible to restore the original mechanical integrity. So sometimes a boat with no extras is better.
In my experience (which is recent) 20k for a used 250 8-10 years old that's in very good condition is what the present market calls for. Look at it this way: You're getting a 5-7k trailer in the deal meaning you're buying the boat for 15K or less. Push comes to shove you could always sell the trailer for at least 5K but that would mean leaving the 250 moored without a ride anywhere else. And considering what a brand spanking new 250 goes for with an OB you've much better off to buy used. Just be picky and continue to ask questions here or read older posts on issues with this model Catalina. FOr example, a recent post discussed interior water damage caused via a leak in the mast step.
