We went out sailing to practice for the Coronados race with my big new spinnaker. It is 30 feet x 18 feet x 0.75 oz. My old one was 29.5 x 16 x 0.5 oz and my #2 spin is 29 x 14 and quite a bit flatter (good for reaching).

We had the boat at hull speed all day surfing big waves. I measured 8 knots apparant beam wind. A little geometry gives 8 knots apparant wind on the beam plus 6 knots boat speed equals 10 knots true wind speed. We were really powered up to the point of being overpowered. We had the pole forward and the twingers on the guy.

With the wind on the beam or just forward at one point we got a huge knockdown to starboard. The drawers in the galley slid out and on the floor - that has never happened before. I was trimming and I dumped the spin sheet. Charlie was steering and I was yelling turn down! turn down! But even with the helm hard over it wouldn't answer. I dumped some more sheet and she came back up. Sail did not go in the water.

After that we were careful not to head up so much. We started coming up in the lulls and heading down in the puffs. We learned where the edge was with this new sail. It was really a fun day. I wanted to practice a gybe and we didn't get to do that, however the douse was flawless.

Its great to have a sail that is totally powered up in 8 knots apparant because this is a light wind area. The race is usually a beam or broad race out to the islands 15 miles, a run around the backside and a very tight close reach back. Actually a great race for an asym. However I've seen everything including tacking out to the islands and tacking back! It is usually very windy around the island. I think if there is any wind beam or forward we'll go up with my #2.

Fun day on the water, nothing broke, learned alot about the new sail. Acording to GPS the max speed hit was 8.3 knots during a surf. Usually averaged right at 6.3 on the spin run.
