Hi All!

I'm having the local marina pull my boat this week out. It will be stored there for the winter on jacks, and I am having them do a complete retrofit of all the swing keel hardware (pins, shims, winch, cable, etc.) Also replacing the thru-hulls per the advice of this forum (I bought a '79 swing keel this spring, and was going to do it before I put it in the water - but my son was seriously injured in a terrorist bus bombing in Israel, and my wife and I had to fly there for an extended period - needless to say, that was my first priority!)

Next year I plan on storing the boat on my property. I am looking for a trailer, but these seem to be few and far between. Thus I am considering building a cradle for it that can be used by my local boat transporter to move and store the boat (I have a Rhodes 22 that has its own cradle - it sank last year on its mooring - but thats another story!!!! It is back on my property, but the keel is broken - it was made from fiberglass with lead shot ballast. I am going to junk the boat, but I still want to try to use its cradle)

Anyway - are there any plans / blueprints floating around for a Cat25 cradle? If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be a great help!

It shows dimensions for the fixed and wing keel, but the swing's draft is 2'8" and the wing is 2'10" so you could alter the appropriate dimension to accommodate.

Actually, I'll suggest that you use the vertical dimension for the wing keel and lower the keel a few inches onto the support. If you err the other way, you could end up with the weight of the boat being supported by the swing keel, which I suspect is not a good idea. (But that's coming from a fin guy...)

If you are planning to use the plans that John is referring to I thank I would add a few more bunks (supports). I thank a minimum of 6 if not 8 would do. Like Dave said you really don’t want the weight of the boat on the keel. Also you might find someone with a Swing keel trailer to get some ideas and measurements?

osmepneo, currently on the hard, has a jowi cradle that used to hold a fin keel Sonar. It has been cut down to hold her wing keel. I don't have dimensions for you, could get the time I visit her.

The arrangement works well for transport, altho I don't do that often, as I use the cradle for winter storage. The biggest difficulty I have is that the bottom of the wing is very difficult to get to for painting.

If you want mote detail let me know and I will do the msome rough measurements for you.

Good point Carl. I have a fin keel and when I put it on the trailer, I like the weight to be on the keel with the rollers just holding the boat in place. I didn't think about where the forces would bear on a swinger resting on the raised keel. Definitely add bunks, the more the better (except when bottom painting <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> doh!)
