Folks: I don't have a pedestal guard and will be installing the X-5 kit Autohelm from Raytheon soon. Any comments regarding the location of the control head would be appreciated.

Willy, I'm guessing you have a wheel & not a tiller since you mention a pedestal? If you've got a tiller I can show you what I've done with my AP, but if it's a wheel, other folks will have to weigh in.
Our was mounted on the starboard coaming when we bought our boat. We didn't use the AutoHelm so I removed it and sold it. Here is a photo showing the location and the cover I made for the hole. Still looking for something useful to put in that spot.
If I were starting from scratch I would put in the pedestal guard and mount it there. We have a pedestal guard and it is a great addition. We have our GPS on it as well as a fold down cockpit table, binocular holders, handheld VHF holder, etc.
Randy's suggestion is a good one. Though you don't have a guard yet, consider a guard as part of the project. A guard is a great handhold and a guard and pod that leaves the top loop free for a hand is my personal preference.
I mounted the control on the cabin bulkhead but in a position not to interfere with using the bulkhead for a back rest. It wasn't the best of location because it is not in reach of the helmsperson and caused spending three boat units for a full feature remote though that investment has been nice on several occasions when cruising in bad weather and making a leg while helming from within the cabin (possible on the 250 with the forward windows).
I've two remote plug in points, one at the pedestal and one within the cabin so all in all it works great but if I'd put the control in a pod at the pedestal there would have been far less need for the remote but it is something worth considering if cruising is in the plans and legs will be made occasionally in foul weather.
Yup - it's a wheel. I've just about maxed out this years "boating bucks" budget....(thanks Arlyn for the gentler way of describing the hole in the water ;o)) What if I temporarily ran the cable through the water pump bellows and put the control head in a block of wood that would clamp on to the pushpit stanchion? Then, next year, I can get the pedestal guard.
Another question: Did you put a cable way of PVC tube inside the pedestal for the wire from/to the wheel motor ?

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"> My cable simply ran down inside the pedestal. There is plenty of room. Once I put in the pedestal guard I ran all wiring inside the pedestal guard legs.
