Found this line/harness in one of my holds on my new to me 250. The previous owner was generous enough to leave it for me. Can't figure out what its purpose is. Can anyone help? I've attached a few pics.

Loren,
It's for attaching the winch cable / line / strap to your mast when raising or lowering it. The main halyard attaches to the loop in the webbing (at the top of the first picture), and the line is attached to the end of your winch line. The webbing is wrapped around the mast below the lower shrouds and then run up as high as it'll go using the halyard which then needs to be very securely tied off on the cleat on the starboard side of the mast.

You should also find two smaller shrouds called "baby stays" that attach to either side of the mast about six & eight feet up the mast (this may be different slightly on your mast) and then attach with pelican hooks to the bases of your forward amidships stanchions to eye loops welded onto them for that purpose. They're designed to stabilize the mast from side to side as it's raised & lowered.

This is all covered in the manual you should have gotten with the boat.

Hopefully this helps, I'm in sort of a rush so I'm not being very descriptive, others will chime in if I haven't explained it well.

Welcome to the forum!

1st thing I thought was it looks like a great thing to slip over a dock piling for quick/simple temporary docking

Thanks David!

It makes sense that it might have something to do with the mast raising system as it was in the same hold as the other parts needed for the process. Just wasn't sure how to use it.

I also thought is could double as a noose just in case I want hang myself for owning TWO boats!!!

Loren, I know this is off topic, but I am very interested in what it is like to sail a C-25 in Vancouver/Portland area, in general and on the Colombia River specifically because I may be moving there in the distant future. Perhaps we could take it off-line and do it via
e-mail.

Loren, Although it may be initially mistaken for the Nauti Duck Dock-o-Matic David nailed it. Let us know if you need any help with the mast raising system. It is very well designed and makes mast raising safe and easy. We live and sail in Eugene and our daughter lives in PDX so we get up there frequently. Would be happy to give you any help you may need. And, congratulations on your new 250!

We did not receive anything like that in our C250 New 2005!!!!!

The dealer told us that we had to use the Jib Halyard to raise the mast (we have the furler, so the original Jib halyard is unused)

Not sure there is any benefit to using the strap... any opinions?

I'm not sure how you use the jib halyard but, the strap system is wonderfully simple. Simply attach the mainsail shackle to the webbing and tighten the main halyard to keep the strap just below the lights while the mast goes up. The line from the strap attaches to the hook on the trailer winch strap with a bowline.

Paul, I think the benefits are that there are no forces applied to the jib sheave, especially during the initial lift from near-horizontal, and that there is less stress on the mast by raising from its mid-point. Not sure either is a big deal.
