Have you had a bimini before? Buy one to fit on top of the cockpit coaming, not on the deck outside the coaming. We actually transferred ours from a C-22, so we had no choice about placement. Ours makes going forward with the bimini up somewhat dificult due to the width (and the short height as we have a tall rig.
Catalina Direct, or West Marine. I disagree with dmpilc -- mine is attached to slides on the jib car track, which allow it to move forward and aft. Click on the bimini in Tech Tips.
Mobility would have been much easier if I had purchased a new bimini wide enough to mount on the jib tracks, but that wasn't in the budget. I wanted to be able to use the one bimini on either the C-22 or the C-25, so I had little choice on placement of the mounting brackets. They ended up in the middle on the deck between the coaming and the jib tracks, so in the down position, the frame and fabric at the curves of the bow do block a lot of the walk space beside the cabin top. So yes, mount it on the coaming or all the way out on the jib tracks, but not the space in between. BTW, I also have a tall rig with the lower riding boom, so I was lucky that the bimini from the C-22 actually did fit, just barely, without having to cut the poles. 65roses, you didn't indicate if your 84 boat is a standard or tall rig. That will affect the size you buy.
My boat is a tall rig, however the previous owner had the main sail cut off so that the boom wouldn't hit him or his wife while sailing. I am not sure how much was cut off, need to investigate that.
A Bimini is a great addition and you can save some $$$ if you get the off the shelf kind and you are a little handy to make them fit. I went with the top of the coaming mounted on slide tracks because I wanted to be able to walk around it to get forward. I had to cut a few inches off of the tubes to clear the boom ( about 1 inch). I highly suggest getting all stainless verses the aluminum for the added strength because these will become handholds. I also didn't want to block the side access to the boat when boarding so I opted out on any support tubes that would get in the way and instead ran the straps to eyelets jut above the coaming boxes. It will fold up and lay on the cabin top if I want to put it down but I haven't ever yet.
Where are you located? I am looking to get rid of the bimini that is on the 1979 TR that I just bought. It was the first thing I took off when I bought it. email me djdurrett at gmail.
Has anyone put a Bimini on a Catalina 250 vintage 2007. In the posting I see on this site an installation for a Catalina 25 with the mainsheet aft. Mine has the Mainsheet just aft of main cabin entryway. Therefore I believe the Bimini will need to be aft of the mainsheet and also have a opening to allow for the rear stay.

My bimini is attached to the side of the coaming but is wide enough to fit on the jib tracks.
I saw some bimini slides on CD but I think they look a little light weight. Any suggestions on where to look for some beefier slides (I checked Defender but didn't see anything).
