Good points about countersinking and preventing the bolt from turning... I'll skip the tape and stay with the goop--Life Caulk polysulfide. Snug, cure, tighten, and zip off the excess.

BTW, to countersink with an over-sized drill bit, you can avoid going too deep (which is way too easy with a power drill) by running the drill in reverse.

Butyl tape. Who would have thought. I was a building contractor in a former life and saw a lot of butyl tape installations. It seemed to me that it had a tendency to harden over time, especially in wood. but those installations may have been before more recent formulations. I'll say this, it's a lot easier to clean up excess butyl tape than it is all the stuff in tubes. I think I'll try this with a fitting and compare how well it holds up to the other fittings set with polysulfide etc.

There are some pix behind the pix titled "Bottom Job" also.

Just a caution on using butyl tape. For those of you who have removed and resealed your windows, you will recognize the gray butyl tape that was used at the factory to seal the window frames to the deck. This tape was one of the main causes of leakage. The butyl tape does not get hard over time, and it does slowly 'cold-flow' as it is heated. When I removed the window frames in my boat, the butly tape had flowed away from the frame/deck and let in the water. The Catalina Direct widow re-seal kit does not include new butyl tape, they send a tube of 4200 instead(but Life Caulk is better).

Beautiful boat! Interesting keel--a distinctly shallow fin with no wing for more weight down low. I'm suspicious she looks better than she performs to windward... although very few will perform as well as this one looks!

Here goes my trial of sealing deck items with butyl tape. Sure is a lot less messy than caulk out of a tube!
