They both work. Trends are the valuable data, so pick your poison. Are you comparing aneroid (mechanical) versus electronic? I like basic aneroids with a movable reference point needle, but it is really just personal preference.
I picked up a Kestrel pocket weather meter that has been a great tool. It measures wind speed, along with a million other things. I highly recommend one.
I second the Kestrel. Rita bought me one for my birthday a couple of years ago and it has more weather info than I'm likely to ever use. I think if I were putting a barometer in the cabin, I'd go with a nice aneroid, probably from Weems & Plath, but having an electronic weather station hanging on a lanyard around my neck is very handy.
Having an aneroid barometer does no good unless you log readings every hour or so. I have a Weems & Plath and used to update my log every thirty minutes when I was cruising a lot. You can get a good indication of weather changes tracking barometer readings over time and combining them with visual observation.
Electronic barometers, as you mention, eliminte the need to record your readings and provide trends automatically. Much more convenient. Noting readings in a log is still important though.
In the end it boils down to how much you're willing to spend for convenience.
