Just a little opinion ... I had Jasconius 25 Catalina out the other day for a nice sail, gusts up to 25mph and my inexperience crew pops open their wine ... I mentioned to my daughter, the next day, I would feel better if they saved the drinking until we dock. Am I just being an old fart to ask that, a rule be no drinking until we dock. then we can kick back and talk of the nice time we had on the water.
I usually gauge whether or not those who wish to drink can be of any use to me.
If they are all thumbs and ask me why I want then to pull on the rope, then I explain to them - sit back, don't touch anything and enjoy the sail. Here, have a few drinks, then go below and relax.
If, however, I need them to crew, go up on the foredeck to handle the fouled jib sheet, or handoff docklines to helpful people on the slip and they show even an iota of aptitude, I advise them not to drink until we're safely back at the dock.
I'll place myself in the OF category. I am also an ME and I see on a pretty regular basis the bad effects of alcohol. I think that some in moderation is fine, but if you have passengers with impaired judgement and/or motor skills there could be a problem whether they are crewing or not. I would certainly be up on my MOB procedures if you're going to allow drinking while underway.
