fact finding ... I'm in the process of relocating from Boston MA area, to Charleston SC any body have any idea of the cost for this move ... it's a sell or haul type decision ... I have a Catalina 25 fixed keel
I have no experience in this but am thinking there are so many variables that the only thing you could do is research. Call a bunch of trucking companies, etc.
There is a website online where you can post your move and have the guys bid on it.
I think you can find it advertised on every ebay ad - not sure. I do know its easy to do. Maybe 5 minutes to post up the ad, and you will have your answer the next day. Just one tip, be sure you are comfortable with teh guy you get. It doesn't take much to get thigns right, but then it doesn't take much to get things wrong, too.

There's about a 1500 pound difference between your boat, Henk's boat and his boat Paul. Not to mention the significant height difference between the fin and the WB 250.
Yeah John, I was going to chime in with our experience shipping Iris but its old information and no longer relevant given what gas prices, the economy and the Oil Slick is doing. All of these will affect what trucks are going where and how much it costs to get a ride on them. I really think the best thing to do is just put an ad out.
Edit to add: I wouldn't at all find it surprising if southbound trips were cheaper than Northbound roght now if folks are tryign to get out of Florida. I know a couple pf people who have brought their floating cottages home this year, and a bunch of people who bought in Fla from folks who were just trying to shed debt. Seems like a lot of empty trucks heading south to bring boats north.
You can rent an adequate truck and I have seen adds for trailer rentals, but I don't know anything about rates. If having it shipped is prohibitive, I would talk to trailer sales company about rentals.
Dave, When I bought Kaija, I looked pretty hard to rent a truck that could haul it. Couldn't find one. Any suggestions in northern Ohio? U-Haul, Enterprise and Ryder told me no.
Unless U-Haul has recently changed their policies you didn't get the right answer from their representative. I have used their rental trucks twice to tow boats from N. Carolina to S. Carolina. First was a MacGregor 26-D four years ago then in July two years ago my Catalina 250 WK. U-Haul would not let me take the mid-size truck I wanted, which would have been big enough, because those had to be returned to the place where rented. So I ended up with a 26 foot truck that got about 10 mpg but could go one-way. If you are moving household goods too then that's O.K. The trailer ball is welded on and is the 2 inch size. Try another rental agent.
Check with Penske, but my U-haul experience a couple of years ago was the same as jbkayaker. Pearl weighs about the same as my Grande Cherokee, so a truck that can pull a tandem axle car hauler, which they also rent, should be adequate for the boat. You might have to get a bigger truck than you need, but you do need to talk to another agent. Check with your marina and local boat or trailer dealers for the trailer. I don't have any specific information, but I can ask around when I go to the lake at the end of the month.
