Once upon a time I think it was Dave Laux chastised someone on here for making recommendations which they hadn't personally tested. Left a lasting impression on me. I tend to agree with him.
So, from the moldy depths of this site's archives, here are a few threads which include some discussion and info on lightning protection. (And my personal observations, having had my sailboats struck twice.)
Oh, and regarding religious icons as protection during violent storms? As a hurricane was passing through here, it ripped the entire tall narrow steeple off one of the most fundamentalist churches on the island, flipped the spire precisely upside down, and very neatly and cleanly stabbed it straight down through the roof of the church, all the way to the pews. It's been my observation regular church attendees often sit in about the same spot every Sunday. I always wondered who usually sat where that steeple tip came to rest....
