Thought I'd share something I saw on a Cat 27 docked a couple of slips over from me.

The owner had the old 4" instruments which went bad over time. Since it's almost impossible to find 4" replacements and he couldn't decide how to handle the holes left behind he decided to go this route to add more light and ventilation to the cabin.

Not bad at all. Also, it looks like his companionway cover could double as a quilt on cold nights! LOL

I'd be interested in finding who made the quilted companionway cover for the friend. Anyone know?

This strikes close to a situation I may have to face soon, although I don't want to do anything this drastic. I may have to replace my, bulkhead mounted, depthsounder with one of a much smaller diameter. Have any of you done this and do you have pictures of the finished project.

Others have covered the hole with a teak cover and gone to a fish finder for a depth sounder. Here's the fish finder I bought, about $70 on sale. I mounted the transducer just behind the keel cable volcano in a glob of wax from a toilet wax ring. Works fine.

It may also be possible to send the instrument off to be repaired. check other threads here on this subject.

Here's my attempt at refurbing the old hole and installing a smaller depth meter. Looks awful!

Then I decided to go with a fishfinder that is also a basic chart plotter/depth meter/gps speedometer/temp gauge.

ps~ iknow iknow, I'll get to the companionway wood soon!

Many company's make depth finders that are around 4.25" square. Mine is a Standard Horizon that the P.O installed when the original went south. It covers the hole nicely and looks good without making up plastic or teak plates. Its model # 150 but is discontinued. Just look in some catalog's or on the web, They are out there.

Went to the boat last night. The label was very faded and I didn't want to climb on a strangers boat but it looked like it said North Canvas and and Upholstery.
