Why Catalina put this ankle scraper in the cockpit? I must have gouged my ankle/shin 50 times on this guy!! there must be a port hole that doesn't have the outer edge that they could have put there!

That was the brilliant idea of a creative PO, not standard equipment.
You could add a smooth wooden frame, painted white. Maybe you could carve one with your sailor's knife, while lounging on deck on the long run down to the Keys.
I'm sure you have lots of spare time on your boat for more projects!
Hey, how about covering the sharp edge with white duct tape?

You could try flush cutting as redeye suggests - but be prepared for possible leaks. Lewmar makes a flush model - like the ones in the head area.
Not sure about the '88's but every '89 I've ever seen has this same port including mine. I've never hit my ankle on it but now that I've said that I'm sure I will carve a nice piece out of my ankle on the next sail.
Same here ! Never considered the port a problem...but now I am sure I am going to find it an unwelcome obstruction in the cockpit. Of coursde, the other option to cutting away the plastic...is to wear sneakers.
