Hey all:

I just purchased an '83 Catalina 25 tall rig. Because of where it came from I could not get a full survey (mountains of Montana), but did get an initial go-through by a guy who buys and sells boats at the location. He also knows the original owner quite well from four years ago and that guy was quite meticulous about maintenance and upkeep.

Pretty good price. I need a bottom paint job and a few minor fixes, but the hull, deck, and interior are extremely sound and dry.

I hope to have it in the water over in my marina in a week or two.

Welcome aboard. Keeping the old girls young is what we do. Fin or swing keel?

Welcome Carlos! Congratulations on your new toy. Be sure to take advantage of the knowledge available here. Oh, and yes, you can join the club. Your dues of $22/year is maybe the best money you can spend on your boat. But, you can still take advantage of this forum without being a member. You just won't have access to the "Member's Only" sections which include some great equipment discount offers.

Welcome, Carlos--from an alumnus. I'll add an "advertisement" (although I have no connection) for Catalina Direct--a third-party supplier of replacements and upgrades for our old boats. I strongly recommend getting their "C-25 Owner's Handbook" for $10--it's essentially their catalog, but also has many ideas and upgrades you can ponder. They are great people to work with for basic components such as standing rigging and (if appropriate) swing keel maintenance. The handbook is looseleaf, and updated every year with their new prices, of course, as well as their new products.

Again, welcome to the forum and have a blast with your new boat! The C-25 is a fine vessel and a great value!

Welcome to the forum, Carlos. We have an 84 tall rig. This group of sailors helped me a lot, and we'll help you as much as we can. There's a wealth of information here about these boats. We'd love to see some pictures of your purchase.

All:

Here's a picture. It's not much, I know, but the sky was threatening to let the hounds of hell break loose any minute.

Obviously the bottom needs a paint. What's on there looks like a barrier coat, so with luck I'll just need to sand and paint. I might be able to do it myself and save some money. She also needs a few other things, but this is the first boat I've looked at of this vintage that has virtually no spider cracks or gelcoat cracks around fittings or on inside corners. The bilge was bone dry (well, okay, she's not in the water...) with no evidence of rust or water stains around the very healthy-looking keel bolt nuts. Similarly, there was no staining or rusting around the lower sweges on the standing rigging, but a full replacement is in the works for the near future, probably depending on what else needs to be done. Also, a bow pulpit base plate needs to be re-welded, and the head pump apparently leaks (water.) Only other issue is the vintage engine, which is being tuned up for Spring by my favorite outboard shop. Looks to have a battery charging system on it. I'll put a new outboard in the budget for next year, depending on the report back from the shop.

I've been checking in this forum since last year. I actually had written in with some questions about possible buys, but had just started looking when they came up for sale, and I wasn't ready to sign the check. I also want to mention that Boat Guru Mr. Catalina 25, Bill Holcomb, is in my marina, and was a big factor in me looking at a Catalina 25. What a great resource, and he doesn't mind talking about boats (imagine that.)

Fingers crossed it will be transported here middle of the coming week. It seems like the stars are aligning for this one. It's on a yard trailer, with no brakes, no fenders, no lights, single axle, in a place where the lake draws down every year so EVERY boat needs to come out of the water. So the trailer is unusable to me for transport. But the guy who did the initial look-through for me runs a boating place and can use yard trailers. So he's transporting it the 160 miles to the shop at my marina in exchange for the yard trailer, which to me is worth a lot of money.

Also needs a good polish and lots of teak oil, and maybe paint the non-skid a different color (it's currently white.) And a definite name change.

Carlos

Carlos--this might not apply in Montana, its pretty north up there. But I once made the mistake of painting the non-skid area of a boat deck with a beautiful gold color to match the teak toe rail and other trim. Mind you, this was in New Orleans. The following spring I had the pleasure of re-painting the darn stuff with a barely visible beige color. Couldn't stand on that gold color in the New Orleans summer sun. Ouch.

Very nice looking boat Carlos. I sail on inland waters also. After some research I repainted my bottom this spring with Sea Hawk Monterey. Everybody has their own choice of paints. I picked this one because it had a good performance review in Practical Sailor and is a Latex not solvent based paint. It goes over almost any paint and is a semi hard ablative which works with trailered boats. I found it to go one well. Although it does want to dry pretty fast. Reasonable price. http://www.seahawkpaints.com/Our-Products/Product/Monterey.aspx
