I was wondering if there might be someone (or a couple) in the Port Clinton area available to help with a new-to-me Catalina 25. I purchased late last fall. The previous owner was to meet with me this Spring to go over the boat, and even take me out to teach me to sail it, but he has health problems now. I know it is asking a lot, but any help at all would be appreciated. Anything from just going over the boat and how to operate bilge/head/etc to docking to even taking it for a sail. How much is up to you. I will line up professional help for later if needed. My 23 year old son and I were hoping to do something this weekend.
I hope you find someone in your area who can help. If you were nearby, I certainly would. (Its' a long drive from the eastern end of the lake but I hear it has more interesting destinations.) This is a great forum and glad you found us. There are probably dozens willing to give you a hand. But, watch for t-storm on Saturday. Please tell us about your past sailing experience and why you chose a C25.
Welcome! Sorry I'm a little far away... but if you're in a marina, there're probably any number of sailors who would be happy to "show you the ropes"--your boat is pretty generic regarding the rig and handling... ( and plumbing.)
Do you have any sailing experience? If not, I'll definitely recommend getting into a class by somebody like US Sailing--I don't know what's available... There's a lot to learn, and you're the captain of a pretty big piece of equipment, responsible for the safety of your passengers and crew, as well as the boats around you. It doesn't require a doctorate, but it ain't no Sunfish, either. (Nor is it a Bayliner.)
What Marina/club are you in What is your hull number - we sold our c25 to a guy in port clinton a few years back. He didn't keep it very long, but I have heard it is still in the area.
Based on your profile, I would guess you are in the Toledo area??
Thats about 5 hours away for me, a little far for a sail but do-able for a weekend. I can offer you the opposite offer - if you want to come sail on my boat for a weekend regatta, we have many lined up this summer and they are usually complete with food and fun. Although our boats wouldn't be exactly the same, they should be similar enough.
I am at Brands Marina. The boat is a one owner, 1984. I have no previous sailing experience except for chartering with crew in Carribean and Lake Michigan. I initially started looking at Capri 22's. However, it quickly appeared that the Catalina 25 would serve me longer, especially on Lake Erie. I joined a Power Squadron in the fall. I have taken Seamanship and Piloting so far. I certainly am looking at classes.
This forum is going to feed you a ton of knowledge. I can't get out your way for a few months but next to John Russell am probably the next closest to Port Clinton.
Feel free to email me (via the forum) and at the very least I might be able to get on the horn and answer some questions real time.
In the meantime, prioritize your questions and post them a one post at a time. I gurantee you'll get answers -
Thank you. I did ante up and became a member of this site. I knew it would be very valuable. I just haven't had the questions yet to ask. I have searched and found answers for items like hull prep, bottom painting, etc.
One of my biggest issues owning a boat on Lake Erie is that the weather keeps me off the water too much. It's not the size of the waves as much as the steepness and interval. The shallow (western) end of the lake is real choppy even with not very much wind. Partner that with the popularity of that area for stinkpotters, the water is like a washing machine. Worthless trivia: The Marblehead Coast Guard station is the busiest in the United States due to all the boats that are there.
My boat (a C250) is on south side of the Sandusky bay. The weather this weekend is not looking promising. Big winds (especially for a first sail) on Saturday along with rain forecast for both days. Lake Erie can get real ugly in bad weather. I wouldn't want to be on it, particularly in an unfamiliar boat. I could be helpful next week perhaps if you're available Mon-Fri? If not, maybe next weekend if my Admiral doesn't already have me scheduled?
Full disclosure:Is your boat already rigged? I've never rigged a C25. Is it in the water? I've never trailer launched one either. My boat gets lifted in. What kind of keel does your boat have? I've never operated a swing keel. I've also never operated a marine head. I've never asked for a bridge opening. You'll need that to get from Brands to the lake if my memory serves me well. I haven't been on a C25 in 20+ years. but I imagine I could feel myself around one pretty well.
You can e-mail me at j.j.russell AT oh.rr DOT com or through this website. There are a couple of other C25 owners in the area as well. Perhaps they'll chime in here.
Duane, I saw the Wasp last year in my marina but haven't seen it since.
I'm at Brand's, C-10 (maybe C-11?), but I am fully committed this weekend. I might be able to come up for a bit next weekend and I will definitely be up on the 30th for 4 - 5 days. Pearl is a little dirty on the topside - I saw no point in finishing my cleaning since the mayflies were out.

Tyson, it will help with many questions and discussions if you go into your Profile and set up a "Signature" that includes your boat's year, rig (SR or TR) and keel (SK or FK)--and maybe your venue.
I can offer the reverse as well; I'm in central Ohio, about two hours away from you. If you would like to come on down for a sail and to familiarize yourself with the boat a bit, I can accommodate. I do have a marine head. I have launched and retrieved as a swing keel, then a wing keel, using a toung extender, a strap, and neither. Dave B. is certainly closer, but if you'd care to take me up on my offer, I'd be happy to have you on board.
Tyson, I tried to send you an email from woh address but it bounced back. I'll try from the forum, but send me a message (Flag & Staff page address) from the address you want me to use if that doesn't work.
