With the "recommended" whisker pole for our boat running in the $350 range, i've been searching for ideas for a homemade version. I remember seeeing one version on this forum with bound carabiners on both ends but this version seems pretty good too. I'm thinking about putting the brass snap hooks on both ends so that i can attach it to the sheets rather than the clew. Any comments/ modifications/ suggestions on the design?
It'll work fine in light air, but don't try it above, say, 10kts. It seems unnecessarily complicated. Just drill holes in the two ends of the pole and tie in some line. It's easy enough to just tie the line into the clew and onto the ring on the mast. I raced with such a pole for a whole season. Worked fine with my 110.
If an adjustable length is not necessary, a wood closet dowel also works very well as whisker pole stock, with the added benefit that it floats if it gets dropped overboard, and it flexes well. I made one for about $10 several years ago for our C-22. It works up to about 11'.
