I looked through the archives but didn't find anything that specifically mentioned what capacity brake coupler I should have on my trailer to pull a C25 SR/WK.
It came with a Dico or Titan 6000# coupler but I'm wondering if it should be a 7.500# or greater coupler? 2" or 2-5/16" ball?
Catalina rates the displacement of a C25 as 4150 pounds. Add "stuff" and a motor and you've got maybe 4800 pounds. The trailer itself is probably around 1000 pounds. So for guestimating the total weight, 6000 pounds is probably about right. That weight works out to also be what a standard frame hitch with a 2" ball is rated for.
It's a Magic Tilt HDM26 and was originally setup for a Hunter 26.
I spoke to Champion Trailers this morning and he said my coupler should be more than enough up to and maybe slightly beyond 7,000#'s and it's a 2" ball. My GVWR is 6,860 or something like that.
I'm going to replace my drum brakes and go to disc. They recommended their Kodiak Silver Cad disk brakes since I'm most likely only going to load via Travelift.
Some years ago a colleague at work made an insert for his truck's receiver. He made this by cutting a solid 2" square piece of steel that fit into the trucks receiver. To that he bolted a piece of 2" square steel, 12" in length. He bolted this at a right angle to the piece in the receiver. He then bolted a piece of 2" to the bottom of the 12" vertical piece and attached the ball to that. Sort of a Z shaped piece that lowered the ball 12". He bolted this together using 2, 1/2" bolts at each joint. The loads on the bolts was astronomical. We begged him not to use that contraption for so long he finally got angry with us and threw it in the scrap bin. We immediately hid it on him so he could not use it to tow a car trailer. Thank God he bought a proper receiver insert. Phew!
