I don't know if they were the first to say it, but they seem to get the credit. If you're on this forum, you're part way there.
Back in 2002 I suddenly found myself on an unplanned, unpaid vacation, along with about 1,000 others in the same local industry. It took a few weeks of job hunting for the laughable futility to sink in. So I finished up my C-25 To-Do list, and got serious about those day dreams of island hopping in the Bahamas. Once I shifted mental gears, it wasn't hard to cast off the lines, literally and figuratively. I wouldn't trade those memories for whatever pay checks I might have missed while living them.
My C-25 was one of the two smallest foreign flagged sailboats I saw in the Abacos. (There was another C-25.) Several times older owners of larger cruising boats told me, "You made the right choice, going sooner in a smaller boat."
A lot of boat owners are planning to take that dream cruise just as soon as ______. (Fill in the blank with any number of artificial obstacles.) And a lot of cruising boats at estate sales need a bottom job, and never did make it over the horizon.
