Steve, it will be, NOW, for me. I just got PiSeas II back 7am this morning from the shipyard after 3 1/2 weeks, with fresh bottom paint. I got a new non copper, non toxic paint from Interlux. This is a brand new paint that Interlux just developed. I believe I am (one of) the first to get it. It took the paint longer-2 1/2 extra weeks- to arrive than the shipyard thought as it was not quite ready. Anyway I will be sailing Sat, Sun & Monday to make up lost time. Sunday will be watching all the fireworks shows in the harbor and spending the nite aboard. Got extra bottle of propane for BBQ as well as extra sun block. Its supposed to be a sunny weekend but the hottest on Monday- in the mid 70's. What is everyone else up to? Steve A
Boat will be alongside this weekend. Peggy is on call this weekend, so no sailing.
Sunday we'll have the Family BBQ and Monday will be our day. Most of the cities nearby have Fireworkds, and we can see thedisplays from all over the city.
With temps in the 90s here in CT this weekend, my wife and I are planning to hit the Charlestown RI ocean beaches that are typically in the 60s-70s this time of year.
Since the huge holiday traffic mess will have subsided by tomorrow, we'll head out Sat, stay over in a small motel and enjoy the beach on Sunday, and head home before the big Monday night rush.
I hope to spend Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday out sailing. And if I can work the deal I will be picking up a Flying Scot on the way home. So that would take up most of Monday
We had a great day on the bay today! Will likely avoid the water Sat and Sun. Too many go-fasts. Maybe go out on Monday even though it's the federal holiday. I'm hoping that the stinkpotters will be out of gas by then.
We'll be sailing Saturday and Monday. Sunday we'll go out to the club and sit in the boat at the slip while the fireworks display goes on at the lake. Our club does the fireworks and lots of boats anchor just off the marina to see the show. I get almost as much enjoyment watching all the boats with their lights on out in the lake as I do watching the fireworks.
At our lake the sailboats and motorboats (ski and wake board mostly) co-exist pretty well. The go-fast boats tend to stick close to shore where the water is smoother and the sailboats are out in the middle. Things are pretty friendly and courteous.
We've had a wet and cool spring. Finally the summer weather looks like it is going to arrive.
Finally got out for a few hours yesterday afternoon. Decided to go with just the jib Barnegat Bay is beautiful in the late afternoon. Don't think I will try again until maybe late monday afternoon. The Bay is very, very busy during holiday weekends.
No sailing Friday or Saturday for me, race week-end in Daytona. Went and watched Junior win the Nationwide race (Friday night) with his dad's paint scheme on the car, was great. BBQ on the sandbar Saturday, tried to sail yesterday but the weather kept us away. Sat on the beach and watched the fireworks last night, was a great show!
Decided to go out on the bay yesterday evening. Glad we did. Nobody was on the bay, they all went out to the lake. Had a nice sail watching the sunset then we turned around and headed toward Cedar Point to watch the fireworks at 10 off our port beam . Furled the genoa and sailed slowly along on a starboard reach practically luffing the main with fireworks all around the bay in the various small towns. After they ended, we tacked 90 degrees to a port reach and sailed back to the marina. Great evening. The 11 year old even said: "I love sailing". See my previous note titled "Why" and you'll appreciate the irony.
<< Learned to sail in the Bavarian Alps >>
Yepper.. I like to think of some of the sailing as simply training. Some days are just soso... and then there are the magical moments, more than I can remember... You must have some amazing moments from the Bavarian Alps...
Yeah, Ray, some amazing moments. I don't really recall any "amazing" ones that involved sailing though. The lake (Chiemsee, southeast of Munich) was in a beautiful setting surrounded by mountains but, the wind was usually very light and fluky. The strange part was the wind picked up right around dinner time but, the boat rental facility required the boats to be at the slip at 5.
If this were a skiing forum, we could have some "amazing" moments. That's where I learned to ski as well.
My GF and I went sailing today--that's right, sailing on a beetle cat at the Mystic Seaport. Got to do an MOB drill when I lost my Tilley hat during a tack--the boom is very low and you sit on the floorboards--the mainsheet caught the hat, which stayed afloat till we got back to it. The wind was fluky and HOT--we were becalmed one minute and had the rail down the next. I have skinned shins from maneuvering around in the cockpit.
Couple of days at a state park lodge and then got to Pearl wednesday evening. 70"s highs and 50"s lows and winds around 10 kts. Life can occasionally be perfect. Beam reaching at hull speed in 8 - 10 kts and maybe 1 foot waves. It got a little more boisterous on sunday - rolled up to about a 110, and with the roller cut that probably gave me a baggy 70 - 80 in sail area, but it got her back on her feet and made both Pearl and the Admiral more manageable. Then it got hot, 90's and humid, and the mid-day calm settled in, so we motored for the 1430 bridge. Met Ty and Pat on "Vehite", but forgot to ask about pronunciation. They went E and we went NW so I didn't get photos. Vehite is a beautiful C-25.
That Admiral is close, but not quite ready for dusk to dark returns to the river. She has usually dismissed the prospect out of hand, but I could tell that she was really mulling my suggestion that we anchor just east of the channel entrance to watch fireworks. Confidence comes in little steps. She did bring us through the drawbridge and up to our fairway this weekend, but she had no interest in approaching the slip yet. The full length of the channel in moderate traffic is a pretty big step; I never pressure her and figure that she'll let me know when she is ready to try the slip.
