Hi there,

I am looking for a used Catalina 25. One of my prospects has a Harken rigid foil furler. I do like to pull my boat out of the water and trailer sail a few times a year. How much trouble will this be. Is it doable?

Thanks
Frank

I have a Harken furler and I didn't have any particular problems with it when stepping the mast, in fact, it wasn't that much different than stepping with a regular forestay, you just have to be careful not to bend the foils to much.

Here is a procedure from the Tech Tips on singlehanded mast stepping that was submitted by Ted Kuenzli. It looks like he steps his mast singlehandedly with the furler,...

The last set of pictures show my solution for raising and lowering the mast by myself. I do this without any help and actually find it very easy. The mast holder in the stern is two - 2 x 4 x 8's nailed together with a boat trailer roller between two short 2 x 4's at the top. You can see that this is attached to the stern and the support on top of the stern rail. The bottom is held in place with a line which goes through the drain holes. I lift the end of the mast up and lay it on the roller before I then roll the mast forward to attach the bolt in the mast step. The A frame is the key to doing this by yourself. l made the frame out of conduit pipe which has a small piece of wood in each end before applying heat to flatten and drilling holes. The frame is attached to the deck by using a small piece of gas pipe with holes attached to the deck plates for the forward outer shrouds. See diagram for more detail. I attach an halyard to one ring at the top of the frame and a line for the bow pulley to the other ring. The bow pulley line goes back to the cabin top wench which controls the speed going up or coming down.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the reply. Is your mast a tall or regular? I assume you have the aluminum rigid foil right? I know harken used to have a flexible foil, but no longer can get the flexible part.
Do you have to support the end of your furler when trailering?
Thanks
Frank

Although the foil is nice consider this. All you need to do is have one misshap and bend the foil and its all over. It isnt cheap to replace. I recomend not using a rigid foil if your going to trailer. IMHO.

On my standard rig C25, I have what I assume to be is a rigid furler since I haven't seen a Harken flexible furler. I don't trailer my boat(cradled at the marina), but when it was transported to the marina the furler/forestay was still connected at the masthead and then lashed along the length of the mast. The drum end of the furler stuck out a little past the end of the mast(1ft-2ft?), but not so much to be a problem. When stepping I just tied a line to the end of the furler/forestay and hauled her up. It wasn't that difficult, but I should mention there were four of us stepping the mast, one to pull on the forestay and attach clevis pin, two to muscle it up, and a third(me <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>) to surpervise and keep the shrouds and lines from fouling.

Dave,

No, because I never made one of these. This article was submitted by Ted Kuenzli in the tech tips section. I think maybe Buzz Maring made one. Buzz..are you out there?
