Last week, coming in from a session with newbies, I heard a "clunk" sound and, looking back, noticed the outboard at an odd angle and not responding well. Both nuts at the end of a bracket just under the motor had come loose. From now on, I will check them before starting the motor. I refer you to Fig. 17A, nut #29, in the parts manual. When I figure out how, I'll try to transfer a pic of the page. It's an 8mm nut.

Dave, this has nothing to do with the outboard lock. This is the mechanism that holds the motor upright and secured to the mount bracket. There are 2 spring loaded rods (#18 in the pic below) that go from the mount around each side of the motor shaft. Behind the shaft there is a rectangular buffer plate that goes over the 2 rods and is held in place by a pair of nuts (#29) with a washer flange. It is those nuts that came loose. John at Outboardsonline wrote me that he knows of only 2-3 instances where this has happened and thinks they may not have been tightened properly at the factory.
How old is the engine and do you trailer or dock the boat between uses? I have an 07 that is on the stern of a boat that is on a salt water mooring. This type of failure could be disastrous!
I purchased it at Christmas, 2007 and it went on the boat spring, 2008, so it's been on the boat just a bit over 2 years. Boat has been out of the water only once, in June 2008, for some repairs and bottom touch-up.
