I would have thought going from a continuous line to a drum would be a step down unless it is an older model. As with most things Harken, my 00 is flawless in operation and only requires an occasional hosing to clean the bearings. I have never used the other brands, but I do like using my regular halyard to control the luff tension. It would be good to hear from somebody who has lived with more than one brand since most people seem to be pretty happy with the kind they have. Harken is top quality all the way, but there is a real premium added just for the name too.
I have only had the Harken, which I love and can highly recommend. That said as I understand it the real issue is how you plan on using the furler. For most cruising situations I understand the CDI is great and their is no need for a more expensive system. However I also have been told that the CDI is not as good and/or versatile for reefing, so racers tend to prefer the Harken. Others may have different views, but when I bought mine I went with having the most flexibility as possible and gulped at the price delta.
I have the CDI furler on my 25 SK and have had no problems. I recommend the ball bearing upgrade. It works smoothly, is simple to use when installing the sail at the beginning of the season, and the company is very responsive whenever I have had a question.
