We are hoping to take a few days to cruise around Vineyard Sound near Cape Cod in a few weeks and we're trying to find a suitable launch ramp to start from. We would like to depart from somewhere near New Bedford, MA. Does anyone have any reccommendations for where to begin our trip? We'll need a place to launch our swing keeler and park for a few days.
I can't give you any advice about launching, since I've only launched rowboats on Cape Cod.
But I think cruising the waters of Block Island, Cuttyhunk, and Martha's Vinyard is certainly a coastal sailor's dream come true. You also need to be careful, cause one wrong turn in the fog and you're on your way to Ireland.
If you actually go off I-195 into New Bedford, you should visit the US National Park Whaling Museum in the center of town. Nice exhibits.
Mattapoisett looks like a great option for us since it's close to the freeway. Is there a place you can recommend nearby for us to leave the truck/trailer overnight for the 5 days while we sail? Also, how is the ramp? Suitable for the C25 SK?
Jarred - its a nice ramp. You do have to back out 75 feet between boats on the side of the two wharfs (try a google earth and take a look), but I do it when I launch my fin keel. As for overniting the truck and trailer, I will have to think about that. My house/yard is too small, and there is no public overnight trailer parking I can think of.
