You'd think an electric would be on the market by now, especially considering the water coming by the boat could be used to recharge the batteries as you sail.

Maybe after the ethanol craps out all those old outboards....

The motor could be rigged to become a generator as the prop spins while under sail--like regenerative braking in hybrid cars, including the drag.

My thoughts exactly.. it seems like a no brainer, I just kinda shocked it has not made it to market. But I guess the holdup has probably been demand, as sooooo many small gas engines are still running.

Still, I expect we will see the day.

I've seen them on display at the Annapolis Sailboat Show, and a friend at my marina is installing one in his wood-hulled sailboat. He believes that it won't be practical for long distance cruising, but that it'll be adequate to get in and out of the marina for daysailing and local cruising.

I used an electric trolling motor with 55 pound thrust, that's roughly equivalent to a 2 hp gas engine, on a MacGregor 26D which only weighs about 2800 pounds ready to sail. The problem is insufficient range, on the typical battery, when you are becalmed and insufficient thrust when the wind is strong. On the positive side you could not beat the quiet operation and the instant response.

One of the new Lagoon cats, a 440 I think, has electric motors in each hull that can recharge the batteries while sailing. They are also connected to a diesel generator more centrally located in the boat.

I have seen the light! Kinda like the solid state hard drives I've been waiting for, they are out there, I've just not yet made the jump.
