So, went out for a sail with the new balanced rudder installed. As previously mentioned on this forum, it was a little tricky to get set right with much more of the rudder forward than the original design.
My overall opinion of it after a few hours of sailing at all points is... UNBELIEVABLY BETTER! It is like a completely different boat. More wetted surface up wind... you don't have to fight it wondering when the tiller is going to break. So smooth and quicker responding. Definately worth the 6.6 boat units!

I installed a new balanced one this year. Drilling holes straight takes some time and nerves, but overall not to bad. We used a drill press on the floor and a "jig" to level the rudder. All good.
I am glad I have a new one. I must admit, I only see a minor performance increase compared to my original unbalanced one tho. The New one is heavier also.
A few years ago when I obtained my rehab boat I replaced a broken beyond reasonable repair "original" rudder with the "Ida" version balanced rudder. No installation issues, drilling holes, etc -- it fit on the old gudgeons -- and while I can not compare performance to the original rudder I have been told by another 25 owner who has sailed with me that the balanced design handles very differently and better than his original, etc. My rudder is an epoxy (vs cored glass) construction purchased through CD.
