One would think with all the navigation electronics available today this could be avoided . . . unless you're simply too intoxicated or high I suppose.

Have you ever heard of "Cargo cults". Ignorant people where some cargo from wrecked ships has washed ashore think it's a gift from the gods. Some even started up a religion praying for more goodies to arrive from the sea.
