Cool. Here are a few photos I took in Fisher's Island Sound last year on my way to and from Newport and Block Island from Oyster Bay, NY:

Watch hill is a great destination--a huge, sandy anchorage behind Napatree Point, where you can dinghy ashore and walk a short distance across the point to the ocean beach. Watch Hill has a dinghy dock, nice deli, ice cream shop, and the amazing torpedo-sterned fast commuter boat Aphrodite docked nearby.

Walk up the hill to the spectacular Ocean House hotel, condos, and restaurant--magnificently restored to replicate the original at a cost of many millions. A drink on the veranda is worth the few extra bucks... A meal is a little pricey, but a memorable experience.

Block Island is Block Island--a little of everything from nice ocean beaches to lighthouses to lagoons to the touristy little village by Old Harbor... The huge anchorage and mooring field in New Harbor (Great Salt Pond) is a place where you can meet all kinds of folks and you'll hear the calls from the pastry boat early in the morning. Rent bikes (or scooters) at one of the marinas. On a July or August weekend, you might wonder if you got confused and ended up in New Jersey.

Here's another view of Fishers Island Sound (this side of the island at top) from the Mystic River right above my place. I took this from a friend's plane.

I had been to Block a few times before I got the boat. It's nice, but essentially someplace people go to buy sweatshirts. It was one of the top items on the destination check list. I had a great day motoring there from West Port, MA, on a day with no wind. When I got to the Great Salt Pond, I wondered why the Hell I ever wanted to sail there in the first place. It reminded me of a KOA campground, but with boats. The pastry boat in the morning was quite nice, I thought; spared me from having to brew my own coffee. I got out as early as I could the next morning and had a very pleasant, easy beam reach all the way into Fisher's Island Sound and moored in Noank (on the right in Dave's photo above, I think). Dinner at Costello's Clam shack and a rather smelly, embarrassing incident with a pumpout vacuum, a shower and laundry!

I second the motion on Watch Hill, Mystic River and Fishers Island Sound. For some reason, we've missed Stonington harbor, with the only active fishing fleet in CT.

This area is as close to heaven on a summer afternoon that I've seen anywhere around these parts. I think I may cancel my vacation to Lake Winnipesaukee in a few weeks time and get lost out east...... ..... but don't tell the Admiral!

Hi,
Hope you have enjoyed the trip a lot. The pics are so nice and beautiful. I am willing to go for a tour this November. Hope this place would be fine. Can you give me complete details for the trip, so that it helps me going there.
