So i am heading down to Annapolis saturday with some old USAF buds to go hit the bars. i have only tied up for the night once before, at solomons on the sail home from buying the boat, where i dropped $50 to tie up at a gas dock near the tiki bar.
So when i go down id rather save the cash and anchor. also would like to spend a night on the hook for my first time. i have a rubber dinghy to get to/from the shore. but when i go out to get drunk(er) saturday night, what do i do just leave the dinghy tie'd up? sounds like it might grow legs and walk while im gone. is there maybe a water taxi that is affordable? i am going ashore to exchange crews and have breakfast sunday AM (friends for family) as well so that would equal 4 taxi rides....$$. or should i make it easy and just find somewhere to tie up for the night, save anchoring for a quiet gunkhole somewhere else?
Thanks Gents!

The most popular alternative is anchoring for free along the seawall along the Naval Academy (The cadets will wake you early with their calisthentics. Just think of it as a part of the ambiance of Annapolis.) If the wind is blowing hard from the east, from the bay into the harbor, that anchorage can be miserable, with waves rolling under the boat, and you'll be on a lee shore. Otherwise, it's a good anchorage.
Also popular is to pick up a mooring, in the harbor near Ego Alley. Cost is $25. per day. You can also go through the bascule bridge at Spa Creek, and pick up a mooring there. All those moorings are rented by the Annapolis Harbormaster for the same cost. If you see one that's unused, hook onto it, and a harbormaster's boat will come by to collect. If you have a VHF, you should probably call the harbormaster and tell him where you are. He can be contacted by cellphone at (410) 263-7973, or hailed on VHF channel 09 or 17. You'll also want tokens to use at the on-shore showers. Two of them are free with a rental, but you might have to ask for them, and I have seen them give a couple extras if asked nicely.
There is a water taxi available to take you anywhere around the harbor for a cost of about $2.00-$6.00 per person, depending on the location. The anchorage and the two mooring fields are, as I recall, within the $2.00 zone. You should call the water taxi from your boat by VHF Ch 68 or cellphone at (410) 263-0033.
If you want to use your dinghy to get ashore, you can tie it up in Ego Alley (all the way at the end). I haven't had mine stolen there yet, but there's always a first time.
From the main anchorage along the seawall, head towarsd the bridge and either go to Starboard and pull into the Harbormaster side or just before going under the bridge go to port and tie up next to the sailing school. The docks there are safe... No lock required in my opinion... Lock the motor and take the key... That's all...
Nice showers on the other side at the harbormasters office. Even if you drop a hook, you can still register and get shower tokens... The Harbormaster records your Lat and Long daily and will call you if they know how to if you drag. Great holding, but 20 foot depths are common. Chain up!
