I am a member and have tried multiple times. No one updates it as far as I can tell. I will not re-join.

Chris: Great story--thanks! Do you have a theory as to why you couldn't pull away from Newfie like you did on the first leg?

Is that you?

I'll reiterate that the new functionality is a nice piece of work, but if it leaves 1000+ boats behind, that'll be unfortunate. Sorry for the hyjack.

Yeah - I think he started working harder... No, I'm not really sure. He continues to be the bane of my sailing career. I took second in the seasonal championship to him, but am left with a moral dilemma.

I'll bounce this off you guys.

Newfie has outsailed me this year. I can't argue that. I have finished ahead of him in many races, but he has beat me on PHRF, except for a couple races. This points to my improvement as a sailor, but that he continues to be better.

Entering Race 10 of the championship, there was 1 point between us in the series. I had 2 ways to win. I could beat him taking first, or force him into 4th place, and use it as one of my throw aways.

That would set me up to take the championship by doing the same thing over again in Race 11, the last race (I take first or Newfie takes fourth). A pretty simple formula.

On the way to the start line of race 10, I noticed that Newfie didn't have a lifering. RRS and the race instructions both say a yacht must be fitted with CG approved gear appropriate to the boat. I could have protested Newfie and had him DSQ'ed

If I did that it would have let me take the championship since the race was late in the day on a Saturday, and Newf wouldn't have been able to get the needed gear in time for the next day. From what I understand he needs more than just a lifering.

So I leave it to you guys, would you protest someone who you knew was a better sailor on safety gear if thats what it took to win the championship? Would you be proud of the victory afterwards if you did?

I opted to take second place, by 2 points.

An addendum - apparently the race instructions allude to the CG approved equipment but RRS doesn't...

1.2 Life-Saving Equipment and Personal Flotation Devices
A boat shall carry adequate life-saving equipment for all persons on
board, including one item ready for immediate use, unless her class
rules make some other provision. Each competitor is individually
responsible for wearing a personal flotation device adequate for the
conditions.

Personally I would want to beat him on skill and strategy not a safety equipment requirement.

For our Spring series, I was 1 pt ahead. We sailed our heart out and hoped the other boat made a mistake. Can proudly say, we out sailed them. The Fall series has begun. Looking forward to some stiff competition.

Yes, I see it now. Thanks. I had tried submitted the information a number of times over the past few years, without success. I did not mean to PO anyone, was just frustrated. And I did join for other reasons.
