You know last yer at this time, I was in first and need to win twice to hold the position. This year I find myself in almost the same position.
So last weekend we faced off with the only boats that have survived a season of heavy weather racing. Really this year has been a test of gear, preparation and mettle as much as a test of the sailors skills.
Iris has pulled through nicely, not requiring any expensive repairs, and our sails are at the loft, ready to be picked up after their repairs.
Of the survivng boats, it has come down to Newfie and I (again). Last weekend he nudged Iris out of first by 1 point (26 seconds actually) and now we need him to stay out of our way for these last 2 races. Races 1 will likely be a triangle course with 2 mile legs, one triangle followed by a windward leeward circuit.
Race 2 will be the same, but on a 1 mile triangle.
I am confident (after last weekend) that we can beat Newfie on straight time in at least one of the two races, but this last regatta is always a wildcard, both in terms of weather and who will show up.
Why is the end of the season always such a nailbiter!
EDIT 1: AAACK!! After some quick work in Excel, I realize that I need to take 1st in both races and he needs to come in 3rd in at least one. How depressing. This is gonna be tough.
EDIT 2: If he gets 2nd in both races, we tie on points and the winner is determined by who has teh most flags for each place (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) Since I have a bevy of 2nd place finishes, I would win. So all I have to do is win both races. Or at least beat Newfie in each race. As long as Newfie finishes in 3rd or worse, adn I finish ahead of him, things will be rosy. Not super rosy, but rosy.

I didn't. Got beat by Newfie and bitten by a Shark. 3rd place (out of 11) in race 1, making race 2 a moot point.
Race 2 we bobbed around for a while, then my crew got a call about her mother in the hospital. Packed up our toys and went home, scoring DNF.
Newfie Screach came in from race 2 and announced he was selling his boat and moving into the spin fleet for next year. Anyone looking for a fin keel Tanzer 22? The sooner it gets off our lake, the better.
Shoot. One of my key competitors sold his boat this Summer and bought...an even older fully race rigged Catalina 22 that's 400lbs lighter, has the bendy mast, and a pristine bottom. If I can see him, he has corrected over me. We are going to have to sail even better this Fall. Perhaps we will move into the spin fleet next year. But my crew needs more practice before we make the jump.

They rate 221 to our 173, so in an hour-long race I have to beat them by over 4m. If we do any bobbing at all...

Yeah, our toughtest are the Tanzer 22's (Phrf 252) , O'Day tempest (PHRF 267), and Hinterhoeller Shark (PHRF 261). All well sailed and high PHRF ratings, compared to my PHRF of 243.
I think the biggest problem there is the disparity between the ratings. I can usually do really well against the Catalina 27's and similar boats in our fleet that have a PHRF close to mine, and I can usually beat the boats in our fleet with lower PHRF's - A hunter 28.5, Beneteau 23.5, and a few others, but the well sailed Tanzers and Sharks are hard to beat on straight time, and the O'Day will often get me on phrf.
The more I race, the more I see the need to tighten up the fleet, and the more I wish I could go to one design racing. Too bad there is only one other C-25 on the lake that I know of.
